Inspiration
My grandpa has been living with dementia for a while. Watching him slowly forget the people and moments he loves most has been painful, but also motivating. I noticed how much joy he felt when we talked about his past. That inspired me to build something to help people like him hold on to those memories something that could bring comfort, connection, and happiness.
What it does
MemoryLane is a web app designed for elderly users, especially those with early signs of dementia. It creates personalized memory quizzes based on a user’s life story. After filling out a short survey, the app generates custom questions and reads them out loud using voice technology. Users can earn achievements, level up, and engage with familiar topics in a fun and supportive way. The goal is to keep their minds active while making memory care feel personal and enjoyable.
How I built it
I built MemoryLane using modern web tools and frameworks with the help of Bolt. Bolt made it easy to rapidly bring my idea to life by giving me a strong foundation to build a full-stack web app.
I used React for the frontend to create a clean and simple design that elderly users can easily navigate. For the backend, I used Supabase to store memory data, manage authentication, and host my edge functions.
To make the experience personalized, I used the OpenAI API to generate custom quizzes based on each user's answers to a short survey. These quizzes are designed to bring up familiar memories and help strengthen cognitive connections.
I also integrated the ElevenLabs API so the app can read out questions and instructions. This makes it more accessible and engaging for users who may have trouble reading or focusing.
Everything is wrapped in a responsive and easy-to-use interface built with care for people like my grandpa, who inspired this project.
Challenges we ran into
I used up almost all my eleven laps api tokens on accident making the text to speech run in a continues loop:(
Accomplishments that I am proud of
I am proud of building a complete app that can truly help people. I managed to bring together survey driven AI quiz generation, real-time voice interaction, and a gamified experience in one place.
What I learned
how to design with empathy thinking about how our users feel and what they need most. We gained experience working with Supabase, ElevenLabs, and building edge functions. We also learned how important it is to test with real users, especially when designing for a specific group like elderly people with dementia.
What's next for MemoryLane
Next, I want to test MemoryLane in real world settings like retirement centers and memory care facilities. We plan to improve the personalization of quizzes using AI, add support for more languages and voices, and give caregivers tools to track progress. We also hope to get feedback from doctors and therapists to make MemoryLane even more useful in supporting mental health and memory retention.
