Inspiration
What if every post on Reddit could become something that lives beyond a feed?
We wanted to transform communities from places you simply scroll through into worlds you can visit and help shape together. Instead of treating discussions as disposable content, we imagined them growing into living forests where every contribution has a visible impact.
That idea became Memory Grove a social pixel-art experience where knowledge, creativity, and collaboration literally grow into a shared world.
What it does
Memory Grove transforms every subreddit into its own evolving grove.
Users plant trees by contributing to their communities. As more people participate, the grove grows with new landmarks, structures, roads, bridges, wildlife, and eventually unlocks entirely new regions connected to the Ancient Tree.
Players can:
- Plant trees by contributing to the community.
- Watch the grove evolve as milestones are reached.
- Meet the Fox Messenger, a traveler who shares stories from other groves.
- Visit the Ancient Tree and discover hints and wisdom from the Owl.
- Experience dynamic weather, day/night cycles, wildlife behavior, lighting, and environmental effects.
- Travel between different subreddit groves using the Grove Passport.
- Follow announcements and world events through the community notice board.
Rather than gamifying Reddit with points, Memory Grove turns participation into a world that everyone helps build together.
How we built it
Memory Grove was built as a Reddit Devvit application using:
- React + TypeScript
- Devvit
- Node.js
- Pixel-art rendering
- Custom procedural world generation
We designed a living simulation that includes:
- milestone-driven world progression
- dynamic lighting
- weather and seasonal effects
- wildlife AI
- NPC behaviors
- procedural road and bridge generation
- unlockable regions
- subreddit travel system
- persistent grove progression
Every gameplay system was designed around one goal: making community growth feel tangible.
Challenges we ran into
Building a living world inside Reddit presented unique technical and design challenges.
We had to solve:
- procedural generation that still feels handcrafted
- NPC pathfinding around rivers, bridges, buildings, and obstacles
- dynamic weather and lighting without sacrificing performance
- mobile-friendly UI for Reddit's embedded environment
- balancing progression so groves grow naturally without overwhelming new players
Perhaps the biggest challenge was ensuring every feature reinforced the central idea: that communities are living ecosystems rather than static forums.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that Memory Grove became much more than a pixel-art demo.
It evolved into a believable world with its own atmosphere and personality.
Highlights include:
- A fully explorable grove for every subreddit
- Dynamic weather, lighting, and day/night systems
- Wildlife with realistic behaviors
- The traveling Fox Messenger NPC
- Procedural bridges and expanding regions
- Community-driven progression tied directly to participation
- A cohesive visual identity inspired by classic retro games
Most importantly, we built an experience that encourages players to care about growing communities rather than simply collecting rewards.
What we learned
This project taught us that social platforms can become interactive worlds instead of static interfaces.
We learned how important environmental storytelling, subtle feedback, and progression are in creating emotional attachment to a community.
From a technical perspective, we gained experience building procedural systems, AI behaviors, simulation mechanics, and optimized rendering inside the constraints of the Reddit platform.
Most importantly, we learned that the best game mechanics are the ones that naturally encourage people to contribute together.
What's next for Memory Grove
Memory Grove is only the beginning.
Future plans include:
- expanding groves into multiple unlockable regions
- larger community events and seasonal festivals
- unique biome themes for different subreddits
- collaborative construction projects
- additional traveling NPCs
- achievements and long-term progression
- deeper interactions between neighboring groves
Our vision is simple:
To transform Reddit into a living world where every community grows into a place worth visiting, and every meaningful contribution leaves a lasting mark.
