Inspiration: In this technologically advanced world, apps have become a means to maintain relationships, health, lifestyle, and more. Over time, apps have been created for every niche — including apps for dementia patients. These patients can use specially designed apps to stimulate their minds, engage with loved ones, or keep track of day-to-day activities.
Dementia is a syndrome in which there is deterioration in cognitive function beyond what might be expected from the usual consequences of biological ageing. Although it mainly affects older people, it is not an inevitable consequence of ageing. Currently more than 55 million people live with dementia worldwide, and there are nearly 10 million new cases every year. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia and may contribute to 60-70% of cases. Along with the patients, its symptoms tend to take a toll on their caregivers and loved ones as well.
What it does : our applications enables people living with dementia to create a digital memory book to store their personal information, medication information, family tree, journal entries and live a facial recognition feature. The display is extremely simple as it is mainly divided into only 3 sections. The patient just needs to tap on the section they wish to view and will be directed to the data. The application also serves as a reminder by sending notification when it’s time to take their medicine, even if the device is locked.
How we built it: We have built the front end of our application using Java as a programming language and Android Studio as the IDE. The back-end of our application is maintained using Firebase and MongoDB
Challenges we ran into: We struggled incorporating MongoDB with Android Studio.
Accomplishments that we're proud of: We are proud of the data storage facilities, authorization process and the User Interface.
What we learned: We learned the ways to blend front-end with back-end cloud storage devices like Firebase and database like MongoDB.
What's next for Memorium: We plan to scale memorium and make it feasible while still being an affordable and viavle solution for patients with dementia.
