Inspiration

One of our team members had dementia and it caused them great pain to see the ordeal. This is why our idea is focused on helping those with this terrible disease.

What it does

This system incorporates a facial recognition algorithm and alert circuit able to respond to a variety of different individuals. The system could identify between known and unknown individuals.

How we built it

We constructed a facial recognition algorithm that is able to analyze and store information. This information is useful for identifying known individuals from strangers. It is coded using python and openCV.

Challenges we ran into

One of the larger challenges we ran into was the setup of the Qualcomm HDK8450 Kit. We had difficulty connecting to and utilizing the kit effectively. Another challenge was communicating between different microprocessors (Arduino and Raspberry Pi). This was because of difficulty transmitting information through a Bluetooth connection.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

An accomplishment we are proud of is the facial recognition system, which is able to gather and store information about different individuals. This information can later be called upon for information and display on the application. This technology has the potential for being useful for those with dementia to help them recognize their loved ones and identify strangers. We are proud of our circuit accomplishment which is able to incorporate all the required sensors and analyze the required data.

What we learned

We learned circuit construction and optimization skills, programming skills in Python, C++, and C, and time management skills. The incorporation of these skills with effective teamwork, led to the completion of the project.

What's next for Memories

This algorithm can continue to be optimized and run more effectively. The response circuit could adapt more sensors and provide more feedback to alert the user.
