Inspiration

In high school, I was in a service club, which participated in an annual activity of creating physical memory photo books to send to a local senior home. We would take related photos from magazines and distribute them on a page, so that each page displayed photos of a similar category. We were only able to make so many due to limited supplies and members in the club, so I shared the idea with my HackRU partner and we agreed to make a user-friendly digital version of these binder memory books.

What it does

"Memories in Motion" is a digital memory photo book designed to support people with dementia and other types of memory loss by showcasing categorized personal photos in an engaging, interactive way. Tailored to each individual, it helps trigger recognition, build emotional connections, and establish comforting routines. The platform encourages patients and caregivers to view, add, and share meaningful moments, making it a powerful tool for reinforcing identity and creating a sense of familiarity.

How we built it

We built "Memories in Motion" with React to create an interactive, user-friendly experience. React’s component-based design allowed us to easily manage the creation of a new memory book and the extensive, available UI imports helped streamline the web page's overall design and display.

Challenges we ran into

A challenge we ran into was some popular libraries were deprecated, causing compatibility and performance issues. We had to adjust and search further into React's UI-related libraries to find the best alternatives for our web page.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the impactful design and personalization of "Memories in Motion," emphasizing its accessibility and innovative technology.

What we learned

We learned how to effectively collaborate in development when we have limited time and how to adapt to challenges like deprecated libraries.

What's next for Memories in Motion

Some features we want to add to "Memories in Motion" is different ways to crop images added to a memory book page, adding pre-prepared common categorical pages, and adding a note taking option for each page. We also would like to move this web page to a public domain rather than have it serve on localhost.
