Inspiration
Photos capture our most valuable memories, yet most of us rely on cloud services that lock our data into proprietary ecosystems. We wanted the simplicity and elegance of Apple Photos, but with complete ownership of where our data lives. That inspired us to build Memora—a private photo platform powered by your own S3-compatible storage.
What it does
Memora automatically backs up photos and videos from iPhone to user-owned S3 storage while delivering an experience similar to Apple Photos. It provides a beautiful web gallery for viewing and sharing memories with family, allowing users to access their library anywhere without relying on third-party cloud storage.
How we built it
We built a native iOS app for seamless background photo synchronization and a responsive web application for browsing and sharing. The backend is designed around the S3 API, making it compatible with self-hosted object storage, NAS devices, and cloud providers such as MinIO, AWS S3, and Cloudflare R2. The architecture separates storage from application logic, giving users complete flexibility and ownership.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was providing a smooth synchronization experience while handling large photo libraries, Live Photos, videos, and unreliable network conditions. We also focused on designing a scalable architecture that works consistently across different S3-compatible storage providers.
Accomplishments that we're proud of Built a private alternative to Apple Photos without compromising user experience. Enabled users to store memories on infrastructure they fully control. Delivered seamless iPhone backup and a modern web gallery for family sharing. Designed a storage-agnostic architecture that supports multiple S3 providers. What we learned
We learned that privacy and usability don't have to be trade-offs. Building on open standards like S3 enables flexibility while keeping the user experience simple. We also gained valuable insights into large-scale media synchronization, metadata management, and cross-platform consistency.
What's next for Memora
Our roadmap includes AI-powered photo search, face recognition, automatic album generation, shared family spaces, end-to-end encryption, selective offline access, and desktop clients for macOS and Windows. Our long-term vision is to make Memora the best private, self-hosted photo ecosystem for individuals and families—combining the elegance of Apple Photos with the freedom of owning your own data.
