Inspiration

Beautiful stationery and binders filled with clips, stickies, and colourful highlighting are things we miss from the past. Passing notes and memos and recognizing who it's from just from the style and handwriting, holding the sheet in your hand, and getting a little personalized note on your desk are becoming a thing of the past as the black and white of emails and messaging systems take over. Let's bring back the personality, color, and connection opportunities from memo pads in the office while taking full advantage of modern technology to make our lives easier. Best of both worlds!

What it does

Memomi is a web application for offices to simplify organization in a busy environment while fostering small moments of connection and helping fill in the gaps on the way. Using powerful NLP technology, Memomi automatically links related memos together, suggests topical new memos to expand on missing info on, and allows you to send memos to other people in your office space.

How we built it

We built Memomi using Figma for UI design and prototyping, React web apps for frontend development, Flask APIs for the backend logic, and Google Firebase for the database. Cohere's NLP API forms the backbone of our backend logic and is what powers Memomi's intelligent suggestions for tags, groupings, new memos, and links.

Challenges we ran into

With such a dynamic backend with more complex data, we struggled to identify how best to organize and digitize the system. We also struggled a lot with the frontend because of the need to both edit and display data annotated at the exact needed positions based off our information. Connecting our existing backend features to the frontend was our main barrier to showing off our accomplishments.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're very proud of the UI design and what we were able to implement in the frontend. We're also incredibly proud about how strong our backend is! We're able to generate and categorize meaningful tags, groupings, and links between documents and annotate text to display it.

What we learned

We learned about different NLP topics, how to make less rigid databases, and learned a lot more about advanced react state management.

What's next for Memomi

We would love to implement sharing memos in office spaces as well as authorization and more text editing features like markdown support.
