Inspiration

We aimed to create a web app for elderly users and Alzheimer's patients, focusing on integrating smart home technology. Our research showed that existing solutions haven't fully explored this integration, which inspired us to pursue this idea.

What it Does

The app offers:

  • Photo & Video Memories: Allows users to browse family memories with voice introductions to foster emotional connection.
  • Emotional Recording & Comfort: Users can record emotions via voice, and the system offers past records for comfort during emotional fluctuations.
  • Reminders: The voice assistant provides medication reminders, medical appointments, and daily schedules.
  • Physiological Data Sharing: Real-time data sharing with caregivers via smart furniture and wearables.
  • Behavior & Emotional Alerts: Helps identify anxiety or repeated actions and offers support or calls contacts.
  • Social Features: Group calls, anonymous chat, and mini-games for interaction and relaxation.

Integrated Application:

  • Smart Furniture: Height-adjusting beds, smart toilets, wake-up guidance, and environment adjustment.
  • Wearables: Real-time health monitoring, navigation, and emotional analysis based on physiological data.

How We Built It

We planned to use the MERN stack for the web app and conceptualized hardware integration ideas. Development was collaborative via GitHub, but hardware was limited due to material constraints.

Challenges We Faced

Our goal to build a detailed web service required a higher skill level than we possessed. While we intended to implement the MERN stack, we encountered multiple obstacles that caused us to restart the project several times. These setbacks highlighted the technical gaps we need to improve.

Accomplishments

We successfully conceptualized a unique idea integrating smart home solutions for a vulnerable demographic. Through this project, we gained a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers, driving us to refine the concept further.

What We Learned

We learned the complexities of integrating software and hardware and the value of thorough planning. We also identified areas where we need to improve our skills. One of the most rewarding experiences was collaborating with people from different fields. We developed empathy for each other’s roles and gained insights into the workings of front and backend systems. This experience taught us to embrace different perspectives and approaches.

What's Next for MemoMate

MemoMate has the potential to evolve, integrating deeper smart home technology to support Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers. We hope this idea can inspire others to create solutions that make life easier for those in need.
