MemeX is that chrome extension you use when you are really bored, it retrieves and displays GIFs related to your current chrome tab and random memes from Reddit!

Inspiration

Our inspiration stemmed from the fact that we had gained an avenue for us to create something that would be the complete antithesis of a stressful software engineering project. That is, we aimed to have fun whilst creating it. And what could be more fun than memes and GIFs? We're sure everyone at SoC takes pride at our collective strong meme game - so why not package that into a silly little Chrome extension? :D

What it does

Everybody just needs a break sometimes, especially when you are stuck on some code and stackoverflow has nothing to offer (SHock, horror!), fret not! Memex has got your back!

Simply click on the chrome extension or any of the following keyboard shortcuts to activate the extension:

  • Windows: "Ctrl+Shift+Y",
  • Mac: "Command+Shift+Y",
  • Chromeos: "Ctrl+Shift+U",
  • Linux: "Ctrl+Shift+J"

You will receive a popup containing a GIF related to the webpage you are one OR a random meme. Repeat again for more dank gifs and memes!

How We built it

We used a simple combination of CSS, JavaScript and HTML5 to create this extension. We also employed the use of the following APIs and frameworks to make this project possible:

  • Bootstrap to make it look ✨prettier✨
  • jQuery to simplify the process of writing javascript code
  • This awesome Meme API by D3vd
  • The GIPHY API

Accomplishments that We're proud of

We enjoyed making something so fun yet absolutely useless xD.

What's next for MemeX

The extension is currently under review by google for deployment, hopefully we get it through and we may be able to bring MemeX to the chrome extension store! Ideas for the extension are welcome.
