Inspiration

It started with a laugh.

Within the span of a heartbeat, hours of fierce concentration can be shattered by involuntary laughter bursting from the lungs. All because of funny memes.

Most people have laughed at funny images with text, but the rabbit hole goes much, much deeper. Memes are the internet’s Swiss Army knife.

If we agree that to some extent Memes influence political elections, then we also agree that Memes influence our fate as a species.

Memes lighten the heavy heart from emotional and mental health challenges. Memes spread faster than Covid-19 and can be stickier than that clingy ex from the past. It is said that a picture says a thousand words, to this we say; ‘a Meme says a million’.

Memes inspire laughter from hundreds of millions of people every day and laughter is the language of the soul, a sound understood in every language from every region on Earth. Laughter displaces hate and unites us all.

We’re inspired to see more laughter and less hate. More love and less violence. More income for creators in developing nations and less poverty. More financial education for younger generations and less compulsive spending.

We believe we can achieve all this by first acknowledging the deep cultural relevancy of memes, then by re-imagining and innovating on how we interact with them.

Welcome to Meme Market, the Meme-to-Earn platform.

Ask your doctor if Memes are right for you.

What it does

Meme Market is a platform for engaging with Memes in novel ways.

$MEEM ERC-20 Token is the platform’s currency which unlocks functionality within Meme Quests, the Meme Stonk Market, and in the future with Meme Contests and Meme battles as well.

Meme Quests enable anyone to earn free $MEEM tokens while giving brands access to crowdsourced memes. Anyone may create a new account for free. Account holders then complete various tasks, called Quests, and receive free $MEEM tokens in exchange. Quests are easy to complete and include making Memes, sharing Memes, and engaging with the platform overall. There is no limit to the amount of $MEEM people can earn through Quests. Quests can have a broad variance in themes and topics ranging from social media actions, sharing of opinions on trending events, brand marketing, and supporting mental health initiatives.

The Meme Stonk Market Game enables players to share memes and speculate on meme popularity in a simulated market environment. This allows members to learn some financial basics while having fun. Players submit their memes into the Stonk market at a starting popularity value of 0 for other players to assess and speculate on. Each Meme Stonk will be initialized on an ERC-1155 Token Smart Contract with a unique Stonk ID. To speculate on the popularity of a meme a player must use $MEEM tokens to buy Stonks of their favorite Memes which increases or decreases the Memes' popularity values. Every time Meme Stonks are purchased or sold, the price of the subsequent Meme Stonk popularity value purchase increases and decreases. Winners are the participants that are able to spot a quality Meme early, buy Stonks in that meme at a low popularity value before others do, then accumulate the most $MEEM gains by selling their stonks before the Meme popularity fizzles out.

How we built it

Meme Market is a convergence of talent and ideas from some of the internet’s vast Meme Economy.

The idea for the Meme Stonk market is a natural evolution from our work with the subreddit r/memeeconomy where the concept of buying & selling Meme stocks was first tested out within a confined Reddit environment. Understanding why some Memes go super viral and others fizzle out and disappear is a mystery with as many complexities as the human mind, so building a type of guessing game around the concept captured the imaginations of subscribers and really took off on Reddit. Now we get to build a stand-alone version of the game with on-chain capabilities and several new layers of complexities all wrapped around a new UI, it’s a really exciting time. We kept the subreddit’s original domain name of Meme.Market partly out of nostalgia but also because it sounds cool.

We studied popular DeFi and Game-Fi platforms in the market and concluded that a gamified platform with easy-to-use DeFi functionality will be more engaging for our audience. Therefore, we built a Meme Stonk market game that utilizes on-chain assets such as $MEEM token and ERC-1155 Stonk tokens. We also studied and compared many blockchains such as Ethereum, Polygon, Solana, Algorand, and Avalanche. In the end, Polygon came out at the top because of EVM(Ethereum Virtual Machine) compatibility, ease of smart contract development & deployment, and transaction speed & fees.

We also wanted to focus heavily on the ease of onboarding. It was apparent that in order to easily onboard new users, especially users that are used to Web 2.0 technologies, we would need to incorporate Meta Transactions. Meta Transaction (gasless transaction) is a concept, in the context of EVM, where a user does not need to pay for their blockchain transaction gas fees. Instead of gas fees, each user will pay a transaction fee in $MEEM to Meme Market to avoid spammy behavior. We ended up utilizing Openzeppelin’s Defender platform to power meta transactions on our platform, which made a huge impact on our user experience. We believe that this is one of the features that will help Meme Market scale for mass user growth.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into a lot of challenges with incorporating meta transactions. We wanted to offer a gas-less experience on our platform, but we also wanted our users to confirm the least amount of transactions in order to execute their tasks. Thus, we needed an elegant solution. For this reason, we set up a Gnosis Safe deployment mechanism for each new user where all $MEEM token rewards and Meme Stonk holdings are secured on the Gnosis Safe instead of a user’s wallet. This made our architecture more complex from the back-end perspective and our developer had to pull in a bunch of all-nighters, but it offered a really positive experience for our users.

Copyright law and memes have a delicate and controversial history. We want to provide a platform where both the original image owners and meme artists are respected. This has led us to study historical case law to help us better understand where the lines are and how to manage situations that may arise. Doing the best effort on this front will likely be an ongoing process.

Onboarding Web2 natives into the Web3 world is a bigger task than we realized. In 2017 we generally found that most people had very little knowledge about Crypto and were curious. Since then there’s been two more bear markets, a slew of Ponzinomics ventures, and Crypto Haters out in force which has created hesitancy -at best- to swim in the Crypto ecosystem. Through our extended network, we are connected to over 15 million Web2 native memers and our aim is to provide as easy, friendly, and safe onboarding to Web3 as possible by providing free $MEEM to everyone via fun Meme Quests.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re very proud to have a fully functioning MVP in a short period of time. We wanted to implement a trading method that is unique and simulates a fun & addicting Stonk Market. It was also important to implement a relevant UI design that resonates well with Meme Lords, and we delivered!

During our research, we ended up interviewing the parent of a teenager who was an early Alpha tester on Meme Market and it turns out the whole family was discussing, enjoying, and helping the teenager in the meme creation process. Bringing people together in a positive way is something we feel very passionate about. Many of our early concept testers told us that making memes with us was one of their favorite things to do every day.

Our pre-seed round ended up oversubscribed with enthusiastic and helpful angel investors. It took a lot of hard work and round-the-clock conference calls to meet all these new and awesome people and we’re proud of having the grit and determination it takes to manifest a vision in any market condition.

Our partnerships with the Dank Memes Gang and with r/memeeconomy represent our passion to be an inclusive platform that shares with people who want to help. We’re proud of this progress so far and look forward to working collaboratively with many more good meme communities moving forward as well.

What we learned

Memes are so much more important, relevant and powerful than we initially thought. We learned this by taking a step back and looking at market events from a bigger picture perspective.

A venture has only failed after the founders have quit. Persistence, grit, and determination can overcome most of the biggest challenges we face in life. This was learned through the initial testing, fundraising, and early team-building processes.

Having a good product needs to be the top priority. A good development team makes this process go much smoother. We had very little experience with Solidity & Polygon prior to starting this project. We’re glad to have picked Polygon because of how seamless the experience is for the end-user.

An incredible amount of Crypto Twitter activity is fake, paid for, or otherwise misleading. We figured this out after studying how to grow our social accounts by observing what other projects have been doing.

What's next for Meme Market

Release MVP on Mainnet in the upcoming weeks, raise more funds, and get to 1 million memers on-boarded and earning on Meme Market.

Meme Contests will be a feature to host meme events for Discord groups and Twitter accounts. It will open up large-scale community participation in meme creation about their favorite topics.

Meme Battles will be a game-style feature where creators can face off 1-on-1 with other top creators in an epic, time-based battle for who can create the best meme on a random topic within the shortest amount of time. Winners will be determined by anonymous spectator participation and voting.

There are many more meme-based ideas, games, and functions we have brainstormed which we are excited to also add to our road map in due time. :)

Over the past 2 days we started building our next product launch for the platform - Meme Contests. This will enable online communities to effectively host Meme Contests & Events in an organized and easy to manage way. This solves problems of sorting through memes, tracking results, calculating who's winning and trying to browse memes in long threads.

Today we did some UI upgrades; added a total qty of transactions indicator and scroll feature for when there's larger volumes of transactions to the transactions history page as well as total qty of different holdings plus the same scroll feature to the holdings page. Dashboard now shows top holdings from highest quantity of Stonks to least quantity. We also added max buy and max sell buttons to the buy/sell page to allow people to go all in on Stonk buys/sells any time without needing to manually calculate values
