Inspiration

The idea for Memasa came from a simple observation shared by chef and creator Eitan Bernath: people today are overwhelmed with cooking inspiration such as cookbooks, YouTube, Instagram, TV but that inspiration rarely turns into actual cooking.

The problem is not finding recipes. It is knowing whether cooking is realistic with what you already have at home.

When someone sees a dish they want to cook, they often wonder:

  • Do I already have the ingredients?
  • What am I missing?
  • Is it worth starting?

This uncertainty creates mental friction, and many people stop before they even begin. Memasa was created to help people move from “I want to cook this” to “I can cook this now.”

What it does

Memasa is a pantry-based cooking decision app. Users keep a simple list of ingredients they already have in their kitchen. The app then matches those ingredients with recipes and shows what is possible to cook.

Instead of browsing recipes endlessly, users can quickly see:

  • which dishes are realistic to cook
  • which ingredients are already available
  • which ingredients are still missing

Memasa also provides a focused Cook Mode, guiding users from preparing ingredients to completing a recipe in one clear flow. The goal is to make cooking feel clear, achievable, and less overwhelming.

How we built it

Memasa is built as a cross-platform mobile app using Flutter, allowing it to run on both iOS and Android from a single codebase.

The app focuses on three core systems:

  • pantry inventory tracking
  • ingredient-to-recipe matching
  • a guided cooking workflow

We designed the experience to be simple and fast, so users can make cooking decisions without overthinking. Optional account support allows users to keep their pantry and cooking history consistent across devices.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was staying focused on the core problem. Cooking apps often grow into many different directions, such as recipe discovery platforms, meal planners, grocery tools, or social communities.

We intentionally focused on one central question:

“Can I cook this right now?”

Another challenge was balancing helpful guidance with simplicity. We wanted the app to support cooking decisions without making the experience feel complicated.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that Memasa focuses on helping users take action, not just consume cooking content.

Some accomplishments include:

  • A pantry-aware recipe matching experience
  • A clear flow from ingredients to cooking
  • A simple and approachable interface
  • A product concept built around real cooking behavior

Memasa helps turn cooking inspiration into real kitchen action.

What we learned

Building Memasa taught us that many people want to cook more often, but small uncertainties can stop them from starting. Even simple questions like missing one ingredient, can create hesitation.

We learned that:

  • reducing mental effort is powerful
  • simple workflows are more effective than complex features
  • context (what you already have) matters more than discovery

Cooking becomes easier when decisions become clearer.

What's next for memasa

Next, we want to improve how Memasa supports real kitchen situations.

Future directions include:

  • smarter ingredient matching
  • easier pantry management
  • improved Cook Mode guidance
  • support for more recipe sources

Our long-term goal is to make Memasa a helpful companion in the kitchen, turning cooking ideas into cooking actions.
