Inspiration

Music has the power to spark joy and curiosity in young minds. With a background in music but zero coding experience, I wanted to share that magic in a format kids already love: interactive, character-driven apps. Inspired by My Singing Monsters, Melody Mates was born from the idea that learning music should feel like play, not homework.

What it does

Melody Mates is an interactive musical playground for young learners. Kids toggle adorable characters on and off, each adding a unique sound to a growing harmony. Through experimentation, they intuitively discover concepts like harmony, rhythm, and melody. The app is organized into themed "albums," each with its own distinct visual and musical style.

How we built it

Melody Mates was built entirely using MeDo, the hackathon's sponsor, over a couple of weeks. Every character, sound, and asset was generated and assembled within the MeDo ecosystem through iterative prompt refinement.

Challenges we ran into

Two big hurdles stood out: getting independent character sounds to genuinely harmonize instead of clash, and keeping the visual theme consistent across assets. Both took plenty of trial and error, but refining our prompts eventually gave each album section a clear, cohesive identity.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

First and foremost — it's cute and genuinely fun to use. We showed Melody Mates to several toddlers and young children, and they engaged with it just like any app they love. On a personal note, while I collaborated with TiChiKey on some aspects, this was an entirely new experience for me. Coming from a music background with no coding experience, taking Melody Mates from concept to working app is something I'm incredibly proud of.

What we learned

You don't need to be a developer to build something meaningful — just the right tools, persistence, and a clear vision. I gained hands-on experience in prompt engineering, iterative design, and pairing sound with visuals.

What's next for Melody Mates

There's so much more to explore in music. Next up: recording custom percussion to expand the sound library, unlocking new characters and richer musical possibilities. I also plan to introduce new themed albums spanning different genres and cultural traditions. The musical possibilities are endless. 🎶
