In regions like South Africa, language barriers and literacy challenges make it even harder to ensure that safety training and compliance reach all employees. Melly was created to bridge this gap. By integrating AI with real-time document automation and multilingual support, Melly makes safety not just a priority, but an easy, engaging, and accessible experience for workers across industries. We are inspired by the idea of using AI to simplify, automate, and democratize safety training, ensuring that no one is left behind in the fight for safer workplaces.”

What it does

Melly is an AI-powered safety assistant that automates and simplifies the entire workplace safety process: Multilingual Safety Training: Provides engaging, interactive safety training in multiple languages (English, Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho, Afrikaans). Compliance Automation: Automatically generates compliance documents such as checklists, risk assessments, and training certificates. Incident Tracking: Logs safety incidents in real-time and tracks progress, visualized through an intuitive dashboard. accessibility: Tailored for workplaces with diverse teams, Melly makes safety training accessible to everyone, overcoming barriers like literacy and language. Data-Driven Insights: Provides actionable insights into workplace safety through real-time data, helping managers stay ahead of potential risks.”

How we built it

Melly was built using cutting-edge tools and frameworks to ensure robust AI-powered safety solutions: Google Cloud's Gemini API: For generating real-time text responses, AI-powered safety training, and multilingual support. Veo 3: For turning static safety posters into animated, engaging explainers. Python: Used for automating compliance document generation and filling in OHS templates automatically. Tableau: For creating interactive dashboards to track compliance and safety metrics in real time. OHS Haven Branding: Posters, lanyards, and digital assets to enhance the training experience, making it more visual and engaging.”

Challenges we ran into

"While building Melly, we encountered a few technical and logistical challenges: Video Length Limitations: Gemini’s video length limit (8 seconds) posed a challenge for creating long demo videos, which we overcame by using Google Vids to stitch together longer clips. Ensuring Compliance Accuracy: Ensuring that AI-generated training content aligns with real-world OHS regulations required meticulous validation. Multilingual, Culturally Relevant Training: Adapting the safety training to be culturally sensitive while keeping it simple and impactful across multiple languages required ongoing refinement. Real-Time Data Sync: Syncing incident reporting and dashboard data in real-time presented challenges, but was addressed with a solid integration of Google Sheets and Python scripts.”

What we learned

Building Melly has taught us several important lessons: AI and Human Expertise: Combining AI with real-world OHS expertise ensures both efficiency and accuracy in compliance and safety training. Bite-Sized Training Works: Small, digestible training modules are far more effective than lengthy manuals. Accessibility Matters: Multilingual, accessible tools empower workers who have traditionally been left out of compliance systems due to language or literacy barriers. Scalability is Key: Starting small but building with scalability in mind makes it easier to adapt and grow the solution to suit large organizations.”
