Inspiration

I live high-conflict co-parenting. I fought to get structured communication tools written into family court orders because altered texts caused major problems for my family, and I depend on this tool to protect us. That part is personal, but it is not the story that matters.

What actually drove the project was watching victims of abuse get forced to pay monthly fees just to communicate with their abuser through the only platforms the courts would accept and mandate for up to 18+ years. That made me sick. At the same time, the incumbent apps kept raising prices even as the underlying technology made better and cheaper solutions possible. Creators and builders have more power than ever, yet the people who need these tools most were still being charged like it was 2015.

No board. No shareholders. No team of developers. Just the question: can we do this better and cheaper? Then research. Then building. Here today with a lean, efficient competitor offering more in our free plan than others do in their paid plans.

What it does

Co-parenting made easy, affordable, and when needed, the records are court-ready. From messages and video calls to budgets and calendars.

Gemini provides a coach in the app to help keep conversations smooth, calm, and respectful. Gemini will also monitor the site for issues, SEO, and PRs via a Google Cloud agent (that platform is in progress and planned for phase 2). Gemini will also power the in-platform child support tool currently in development and planned for phase 2.

How we built it

A Next.js framework supported by Vercel, Supabase, Gemini, Grok, and Codex.

The core of Mellow.Family is a communication and coordination layer built for high-conflict cases: neutral messaging, structured decision logging, shared calendar, and clean exports that stand up as records.

Everything was bootstrapped. No external capital. No product team. Research first, then iterative building with the actual constraints of the problem in view.

Challenges we ran into

The court-grade evidence layer (SHA-256 hash chain / RFC 3161 / FRE 803(6)) is very complicated to set up and still is not fully wired in until we have a lawyer review and approve it. Mellow.Family stays in beta/demo until then. Everything works but we cannot back the "court-grade evidence" statement yet.

Building without a board, investors, or a development team means every decision carries more weight and every delay is personal. It also means the product is free to optimize for the user instead of for recurring revenue or growth metrics.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm a single dad with minimal coding experience and I am launching a national product aimed at empowering co-parents with a very small team that has mostly been moral support rather than actual contributions. I'm proud to have made it this far.

What we learned

The co-parent communication apps are a $20M/year industry with a small list of competitors. The tech is very affordable to bootstrap in stages. The marketing is low friction (lawyers, therapists, and shelters who recommend these apps). Co-parent communication is something that is court-mandated in many cases and lasts until the child ages into adulthood and beyond.

What's next for Mellow.Family

Elon Musk said it best: "Make it, make it good, then make it pretty."

After beta closes and we have worked out bugs or evolved the UI, we begin phase 2:

  • Agentic management powered by Gemini × Google Cloud
  • An in-app immutable/unalterable child support ledger and payment processing (an income stream from fees)
  • Ensuring each state is properly hardened for court-grade evidence in partnership with our legal team
  • Release onto mobile platforms

Right now it is a PWA so we can get the best version into the app stores after real users provide feedback. This was all staged for budgetary and logistical reasons.

As of today, August 17th, 2026, Mellow Family LLC is a registered company in Lakewood, Colorado with a phone, email, and early-stage socials on X, Facebook, and Reddit. Stage 2 also gives us a marketing runway.
