Inspiration

Melanoma is a common yet hidden skin cancer prevalent in the U.S. Although it is easily treated in early stages it can become deadly when allowed to advance. Because it can look very similar to a mole, birthmark, or scratch, many victims of melanoma do not realize that they may actually have melanoma. We created Mela-No-More in order to help those who may potential victims of melanoma recognize whether they have (or do not have) melanoma, as well as keep them informed about their current skin condition.

What it does

Mela-No-More allows users to take a photo of an area of their skin which they suspect to have melanoma and submit it to the Melanoma image classifier. The classifier will report to the user how likely they are (or are not) to have melanoma. Users can also interact with Mel, Mela-No-More's very own chatbot, who will teach users about melanoma, including prevention tactics, while debunking common myths surrounding it. Finally, users can take the melanoma risk assessment to determine how likely they are to contact melanoma.

Challenges we ran into

One of the challenges we ran into while building our app was creating/finding image datasets for melanoma for our classifier to be trained on.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

One accomplishment we are proud of was the fact that we managed to create a website in a day.

What we learned

Through this project we learned about how deadly hidden skin cancers like Melanoma are for victims of skin cancer, along with how rumors about common myths surrounding melanoma can cause patients to put off contacting medical personnel.

What's next for Mela-No-More: AI-Based Melanoma Detector and Risk Assessor

We hope to expand our dataset to include ocular melanoma (melanoma in the eye) and subungual melanoma (melanoma in the nail).
