Inspiration

Mejbaan was born out of a deep concern for the global issue of food wastage and its devastating impact on communities experiencing hunger and malnutrition. The staggering statistics of 2.5 billion tonnes of food wasted annually while 828 million people suffer from hunger daily urged me to act. Inspired by the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal of "Zero Hunger," I embarked on a mission to create a platform that fosters surplus food sharing and addresses this critical problem head-on.

What it does

Mejbaan is a surplus food-sharing web application that empowers individuals to be part of the solution. It facilitates the seamless sharing of surplus food items with those in need, forging connections between donors and recipients. Through the app, users can list their extra food items, specify details such as food type and quantity and offer a helping hand to combat hunger.

How we built it

I meticulously crafted Mejbaan using cutting-edge technologies to ensure a smooth user experience and efficient functionality. The front-end was developed with JavaScript, React.js, and Next.js, leveraging the power of Tailwind CSS for sleek and responsive designs. I integrated Appwrite, an open-source Backend as a Service for secure user authentication and data storage. The back-end utilized MongoDB for seamless data management. To provide accurate locations and distances, I incorporated the Geolocation API, harnessing the power of GPS/Location Services.

Challenges we ran into

Building Mejbaan came with its fair share of challenges. I faced complexity in developing the location-based search feature, striving to deliver precise results to users. Additionally, ensuring a seamless user experience while adhering to stringent data privacy and security measures presented another set of hurdles.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Amidst the challenges, I take immense pride in creating a platform that fosters a sense of community and altruism. Mejbaan brings together individuals, encouraging them to be part of the greater cause, fighting food waste, and nourishing those in need. Witnessing the positive impact and heartfelt contributions from users has been truly gratifying.

What we learned

Mejbaan taught me the profound significance of technology in addressing critical global issues. The project allowed me to delve into cutting-edge frameworks, APIs, and databases, enriching my technical expertise. Moreover, I witnessed the power of collaboration and innovation in driving social change.

What's next for Mejbaan

As I move forward, I envision enhancing Mejbaan's reach, partnering with NGOs, and forging connections with volunteers to amplify its impact. I plan to scale the platform globally, raising awareness about food waste and hunger through strategic partnerships and outreach initiatives. Additionally, I aim to incorporate AI-driven solutions to optimize food matching and minimize food wastage, making Mejbaan an even more robust tool in the fight against hunger.
