Inspiration

With the global prevalence of dementia rising, we wanted to create a solution that goes beyond passive care. We were inspired by research into neuroplasticity which is the brain's ability to reorganize itself. We looked to build a tool that actively stimulates the specific regions most affected by cognitive decline.

What it does

MEGAMIND! is a cognitive therapy platform designed to mitigate the effects of dementia. By utilizing targeted exercises, the application focuses on stimulating key areas of the brain proven to foster cognitive resilience and neuroplasticity, providing users with a proactive way to manage their brain health.

How we built it

We engineered a robust backend powered by AWS, diving head-first into cloud infrastructure. The core logic is built on Flask, managing real-time data processing and integrating complex computer vision models to track and respond to user interaction.

Challenges we ran into

Cross-Origin Resource Sharing (CORS): Navigating the complexities of Flask-CORS to ensure secure and seamless communication between our frontend and backend.
Deployment Hurdles: Transitioning from a local ngrok tunnel to a production-ready environment on Vercel. This required configuring a personal A record via DNS to ensure stable connectivity.
Full-Stack Integration: Coordinating the flow of data between the vision-processing backend and the interactive frontend interface.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Precision Computer Vision: Successfully implementing CV modules specifically designed to stimulate the Parietal Lobe, translating physical movements into cognitive exercises.
Taking AWS and Cloud Computing from "unknown" to "implemented" in just one day. We built, configured, and deployed a functional cloud-based app with zero prior experience.

What we learned

The biggest takeaway was the sheer versatility of Cloud Development. Learning how to scale and deploy architecture on the fly taught us that with the right infrastructure, technical limitations are just puzzles waiting to be solved.

What's next for MEGAMIND!

Moving forward, we aim to integrate MEGAMIND! into the daily routines of retirement communities and assisted living facilities, providing a scalable tool for cognitive engagement. We are also looking to bridge the gap between technology and clinical care by adapting the platform for use during professional Physical Therapy appointments, allowing specialists to incorporate targeted neurological stimulation into their patient recovery plans.
