Inspiration
The inspiration came from a painful realization during a startup accelerator program. I sat through countless "quick sync" meetings that dragged on for hours, watching talented developers, designers, and executives burn through thousands of euros without anyone realizing the true cost. When I calculated that a single 2-hour "brainstorming session" with 8 people cost our startup €3,200, I knew there had to be a better way to visualize this hidden expense.
The problem isn't just about money—it's about awareness. Teams make decisions differently when they see the real-time financial impact of their time investments.
What it does
How we built it
In Bolt.new
Technical Architecture Frontend: Next.js 14 with TypeScript for type safety and performance Styling: Tailwind CSS with custom design tokens matching Apple's design language Animations: Framer Motion for smooth transitions and Silk.js for sheet overlays State Management: Zustand for global meeting state, optimized for real-time updates Data Persistence: localStorage with auto-save every 10 seconds
Challenges we ran into
Performance Optimization The biggest technical challenge was maintaining 60fps animations while updating costs every second. I solved this by:
Implementing useMemo for expensive calculations Debouncing input changes to prevent unnecessary re-renders Using requestAnimationFrame for smooth counter animations Design Consistency Achieving Apple-level visual consistency across all components required:
Creating a strict design token system with exact spacing and color values Building custom Tailwind configurations to match macOS design patterns Extensive testing across different screen sizes and devices Real-time UX Making the live calculator feel responsive and trustworthy involved:
Implementing optimistic UI updates with fallback states Adding subtle pulse animations to indicate active calculations Creating clear visual feedback for all user actions Mobile Adaptation Translating the desktop-first design to mobile while maintaining the premium feel required:
Converting the fixed sidebar to a bottom navigation Redesigning sheets to be full-height on small screens Optimizing touch targets for iOS/Android guidelines
Accomplishments that we're proud of
What we learned
Building MeetingROI taught me several key lessons:
Design Systems Matter: Creating a cohesive Apple-inspired design system from scratch required deep attention to micro-interactions, typography hierarchy, and animation timing Real-time State Management: Implementing smooth live calculations while maintaining performance across multiple components challenged my understanding of React optimization User Psychology: The most impactful feature wasn't the calculator itself, but the emotional response users had when seeing costs accumulate in real-time Premium UX Standards: Achieving Apple-level polish requires obsessing over details like 300ms spring animations, 1.02 hover scales, and subtle shadow transitions
What's next for MeetingROI
Deploy to production, buy and deploy on a custom URL, maybe trying to sell it on a marketplace.
