Inspiration
How many times have you been to a networking event, party, or social gathering, introduced yourself to a group of people, only to forget someone's name shortly thereafter? Using Alexa's voice capabilities and the Meeting Greeting Alexa skill, you can practice meeting people and remembering everyone's names. Prepare for your next networking event by talking with Alexa through the Meeting Greeting skill.
What it does
The Meeting Greeting Alexa skill incorporates elements of the classic 'memory' game with different tracks of people to meet. Alexa will introduce you to people one by one, and you introduce yourself back to each person. Alexa keeps track of your score for each game, and you can compete against other users by referencing the online leaderboard at www.MeetingGreetingAlexa.com.
How I built it
Meeting Greeting is built using C# / .NET 4.5 / SQL Server. It is hosted on Azure. Libraries used include Unity for Dependency Injection/Inversion of Control and Entity Framework as an ORM for SQL Server. .NET's MemoryCache class was used for persisting session information between requests and responses. The strategy pattern was used to classify each AlexaRequest, define the action to take, and deliver the appropriate AlexaResponse.
Challenges I ran into
The Alexa skill intent schema requires pre-populated lists for possible user input, and as a result, an additional request/response cycle must be added when invoking names, as user text could be a wide variety of possibilities (due to random sequence generation) and therefore a pre-defined schema list cannot be created.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
This was a fun way to learn the Alexa Skills Kit and think about different possibilities and application design for how to interact with a voice enabled device.
What I learned
This application gave me additional practice into a using and building a layered web api and using a DI/IoC container on .NET.
What's next for Meeting Greeting
Meeting Greeting currently introduces people with their first name and last name. In the future, additional information such as job title, company, and personal information could be added to each character for more dynamic introductions. Additional future functionality includes giving users the option of specifying specific people to meet to simulate the use case of an event where attendee lists are posted before an event.
