Inspiration
Meet XiXi draws inspiration from Tamagotchi, the iconic digital pet. We wanted to reimagine the classic virtual pet experience for the modern age, combining AI-driven interaction, emotional expression, and fashion-oriented customization to create a digital companion that grows, communicates, and evolves with its owner.
What it does
Meet XiXi is an AI-based virtual pet where players can:
- Chat with their pet and experience emotional reactions.
- Feed, dress, and care for the pet through four growth stages: Egg → Toddler → Teen → Young Adult.
- Collect items and fashion accessories that drop randomly during interactions.
- See dynamic animations and emotional expressions that reflect the pet’s mood.
- Use voice input for AI conversations and receive personalized responses.
How we built it
- Platform: Unity for iPhone (TestFlight MVP, App Store release planned).
- UI/UX: Designed in Figma with iterative optimizations, supporting English/Japanese and six emotional expressions.
- Backend / APIs: Shopify API integration for linking Momo merchandise and order tracking. Voice-to-text handled via Dify cloud service, with potential local processing for mobile.
- Animation & Interaction: Frame-by-frame animations for each growth stage, including idle, eating, happy, sad, and gestures. Items drop dynamically based on interaction and stage.
Challenges we ran into
- Integrating voice-to-text while maintaining background music on mobile.
- Converting images into .h format for ESP32 AR hardware.
- Supporting multi-language input and emotional animation in real-time.
- Designing a scalable item-drop system for different growth stages without overcomplicating the MVP.
- The AR -reality projection feature of meet.xixi proved too complex and has not been implemented.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- MVP successfully showcased at Hong Kong Designer Con, featuring core interactions and growth stages.
- Implemented six emotional expressions reflecting AI interactions.
- Launched Shopify web chatbot for merchandise linking and order tracking.
- Built a functional vertical slice in Unity with responsive animations and interactive feedback.
What we learned
- Iterative testing with real users is invaluable for emotional connection and interaction flow.
- Cloud-based AI processing must be balanced with mobile performance to maintain smooth gameplay.
- Structured animation pipelines are essential for visual consistency across growth stages.
What's next for meet.xixi
-Official App V1 release in December, integrating AR hardware for physical “Poké Ball” projection.
- Expand voice interaction with local processing support.
- Introduce more complex item-drop systems, interactive gifts, and fashion evolution.
- Explore additional languages and global user support to scale Meet XiXi as an international digital companion.
