Inspiration
As a team, we were inspired by hardship stories we have either heard of or experienced personally about navigating through spaces as women. Throughout this, it sparked the idea of showing the world and hopefully having more women be able to relate this experience. This then leads us to creating an interactive surface that advocates for women’s issues, which is what Mee+U aims for.
What it does
The app helps connect people within any community to be able to find others that are free and would like to commute together. We made this app to combat the high statistics of women who feel unsafe walking alone at night and the high statistics of violence committed against them. At the same time, it is a fun and interactive platform that allows character customization for expression and engagement.
How we built it
We built it with the engine GameMaker and Python coding, along with Pixilart to create the art for character customization.
Challenges we ran into
One of the challenges we first went through was coming up with a solid idea for our project. In fact, we had originally come up with two ideas and had started on both, but due to technical difficulties and lack of time planning , we figured those ideas would not be ideal and so when we finally settled on the “Mee + U” idea , we had already lacked ideal maximal time to work on it. Another challenge was the coding part itself. Many issues came up that we did not know how to solve, especially since some concepts worked with were new to us, such as enabling a multiplayer mode to the game coded.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we were able to create something for the cause of women’s safety, an issue that is still prevalent today.
What we learned
We learned that the process of making a final product can be daunting, especially at the start where we need to come up with an idea that can be useful, meaningful, and also engaging. It takes a lot of team work, communication and asking questions to be able to fully understand what we want to go with.
What's next for Mee+U
We hope to expand the database to more and more schools and eventually to workplaces too. This way, the prototype app will be accessible to many women in the world.
