Inspiration

Our inspiration is rooted in the powerful narrative of Ancient Greek mythology, specifically the curse of Medusa, combined with the engaging loop of modern Animal Care RPGs. We saw a need in Meta Horizon Worlds for an experience that transcends simple collecting. We wanted to fuse an epic narrative (saving cursed spirits) with high-retention mechanics (daily affection and character progression), providing a truly meaningful reason for players to return every day.

What it does

Medusa's Realm: Pet Guardians is a persistent, social Pet Care RPG. Players are the chosen Heroes tasked with purifying the cursed spirits of animals petrified by Medusa across seven themed islands.

Key Features: Seven Islands of Adventure: Each island, named after a Greek god (e.g., Ares Island, Apollo Island), features a unique mini-game. High-Retention Loop: Players interact daily with their companion on Hestia Island to build Affection Points and unlock the Spirit Atlas. Diverse Challenges: Gameplay includes timed shooting, memory puzzles, and parkour racing.

How we built it

We built the project by prioritizing the RPG core over simple assets. We first established the modular structure of the seven islands to optimize performance. We utilized GenAI to rapidly generate over 80% of our environment assets, including unique textures, skyboxes, and soundscapes, freeing up time for complex scripting. The key was using Raycast logic for the Ares Island shooting challenge and Timer/Teleport for the Apollo Island time trial.

Challenges we ran into

Our main challenges revolved around the complexity of two core mini-games and their code integration within the world. For the Ares Island Shooting Challenge, the challenge was creating a stable Raycast detection system that could reliably register hits on the small, moving target on the huge Medusa head and correctly link the hit count to the Medusa's changing fog particle color for visual feedback.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are most proud of the high visual quality and immersion of our world design. The creation of seven visually distinct islands—from the crystalline formations of the Oracle's Gambit Island to the red glow of the Asphodel Fate Island—sets a new standard for environment design on the platform. This diverse and beautiful world, largely executed through the efficient use of GenAI for assets and optimization, provides players with a truly epic backdrop for their heroic journey.

What we learned

We learned that for large projects, modular design is mandatory. Breaking the experience into separate island mini-games allowed for parallel development and crucial performance optimization. We also discovered the power of integrating lore into functionality, particularly through the stone statue creature design. Using the statues as both aesthetic set pieces and interactive unlock points for the Affection System proves that sophisticated storytelling can be achieved through environmental interaction, rather than complex UI menus.

What's next for Medusa's Realm: Animal Guardians

Full Affection System Integration: Fully implement the permanent Affection Leveling and unlock the full Spirit Atlas UI, allowing players to track their progress. Unlock PVE Combat: Open the Hephaestus Island Minotaur combat, allowing for team battles and leaderboards. World Shop Activation: Prepare the Hermès Island economy for Meta's commerce platform, enabling players to spend Purify Tokens on cosmetics and permanent buffs.
