Inspiration
My grandpa has bipolar disorder and it is very common for bipolar people to decide that they feel fine and stop taking their medications when they are manic. My grandmother passed away a couple years ago and my grandpa was living alone and he decided to stop taking his medications and he went on a downward spiral. We wanted to create a solution that would have made it safer for him to live alone and would have notified us when his habits start to change.
What it does
It is a phone app that manages and monitors the patients medication schedule, history, and tendencies. We included an AI agent that can analyze and use that information to keep the patient on schedule and answer questions the patient might have. There is a separate interface that the doctor can access to monitor the patients medications and other related information.
How we built it
We used native react with expo for better devleopment cycle. We also used firebase for our backend. We used claude for ai agent and emailjs for doctor applications
Challenges we ran into
AWS did not work after 7 hours of trying to connect our project to the database. We used firebase as a backup. We could not use the storage feature of firebase for images so we compressed them before sending to prevent a file size error. Version control issues between computers was difficult.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a well put together data system for patients and doctors.
What we learned
We learned how to create projects for mobile applciations with a backend with auth integration.
What's next for MedTrack
If there were more time, we would have been able to make the UI more intuitive for elderly patients. We would have created more interfaces for nurses and caregivers as well. We would have created a more robust database that can contains more information regarding the patients history and get data from when visits are made. We would have liked to include in the medication information refill info and warnings as well as a schedule that could be used for appointments. The AI could be more comprehensive to provide greater details before deferring to the doctor and nurses regarding medical advise.
We had patients with dementia related symptoms in mind when creating the application, but the same app could be used for a handful or other situations such as patients that are coming off a surgery and need to be weened off the medications to prevent addiction or kids and teenagers that are in need of monitoring and reminders.
