Inspiration
Our sister is currently a nursing student and we saw how overwhelming nursing school prep and its licensing prep in general could be: long PDFs, confusing rationales, and tools that were either too generic or too rigid. Competitors like Quizlet, Gizmo, and StudyFetch cover broad subjects, but none focus deeply on nursing/medical exams like ATI TEAS and NCLEX, giving comprensive and application-like questions. We wanted to build something tailored, accurate, and interactive.
What it does
MedStudy transforms user-uploaded materials (PDFs, PPTs, images) into quizzes and practice tests aligned with NCLEX-style questions. Beyond generating answers, MedStudy explains rationales in a conversational manner and allows students to ask follow-up questions, even over voice, until they fully understand the concept.
How we built it
Using Base44, I structured prompts to:
- Accept uploaded content (notes, PPTs, PDFs, images).
- Generate NCLEX-style questions with correct rationales.
- Allow conversational follow-ups with credible sources backing each explanation.
- Enable optional voice interaction for back-to-back discussion with AI.
Challenges we ran into
- Ensuring rationales were accurate and medically sound.
- Balancing detail with simplicity so students don’t feel overwhelmed.
- Building trust that AI explanations are credible and sourced.
Accomplishments
- Created a working prototype that uploads files and generates practice material.
- Integrated follow-up questioning that works like a tutor, not just flashcards.
- Designed the system to scale beyond nursing into other medical specialties.
What we learned
- Students value accuracy more than flashy features.
- Interactivity (asking follow-up questions) is the key to true understanding.
- Medical education tools need trust and credibility baked into design.
What’s next
- Expand to cover multiple exams (USMLE, MCAT, PA boards).
- Partner with educators and institutions for verified content.
- Enhance with collaborative study groups, voice-first tutoring, and analytics.
