Inspiration

We were inspired to create medSafe, a secure and trustworthy medication solution, when one of our team members was prescribed flu medication and realized how easy it was to bypass the rules of modern medicine.

What it does

MedSafe is a hardware solution that enhances prescription safety and improves medication adherence.

  • For pharmacists: MedSafe offers a quick and convenient way to enforce prescription rules, preventing medication abuse and ensuring patient safety.
  • For doctors: MedSafe provides confidence in prescriptions by allowing for a more comprehensive understanding of a patient's medication history. This enables the medical community to prescribe the most appropriate medications while maintaining patient integrity for highly addictive drugs like prescribed THC and opioids.
  • For patients: Besides enforcing pharmacist regulations, MedSafe also includes features that remind individuals when to take their medication, improving adherence to prescribed treatment plans.

How we built it

Challenges we ran into

Some challenges we ran into included creating a secure system across different pieces of hardware such as the Raspberry Pi, the computer that programs the Raspberry Pi, and the web servers. Making sure that each system couldn't be easily compromised was our top priority.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the entire solution we created combining a hardware solution with a convenient software interface.

What we learned

We learned about creating a complete tech stack comprising a web UI frontend, Node server backend, Arduino microcontroller, and 3D-printed casing. It was very fascinating to observe how software architecture integrated with hardware design such as how a JavaScript frontend application could program an Arduino microcontroller.

What's next for medSafe

The type of technology could be employed not only for prescription medication but also for other forms of behavioral adherence. The ability to safely distribute sensitive substances without the overhead of human monitoring greatly increases the efficiency of the general population.
