Inspiration

In today’s fragmented healthcare system, accessing patient medical records securely and efficiently remains a challenge. Patients often feel disempowered when it comes to managing their data, while healthcare providers struggle to obtain timely access to critical information. Inspired by the vision of putting patients in control of their health data while fostering seamless provider collaboration, we developed MedRM & CareExchange. Our goal was to create a system that balances transparency, security, and accessibility, leveraging cutting-edge capabilities like DocuSign e-signature APIs and its the extension apps to redefine consent and data-sharing workflows in healthcare.

What it does

MedRM empowers patients and clinicians by offering intuitive dashboards for managing medical data and digital consent. Patients can view and manage their records, while clinicians can oversee patient metrics and access consent details. The app allows for secure e-signature-powered consent workflows, enabling patients to grant, amend, or revoke access to their data. Additionally, consent preferences are stored in a central database for easy integration with other applications.

CareExchange, on the other hand, acts as a secure health information exchange for providers. After patients grant consent through MedRM, providers can access records by "breaking the seal," where they must declare the patient relationship and provide a reason for accessing the data. This ensures a transparent and secure process, balancing access with accountability.

How we built it

We built MedRM & CareExchange using the DocuSign e-signature API and the extension app capabilities to manage consent workflows, validate data, and archive signed forms. The MedRM app features a clinician dashboard for managing patients and tracking metrics, along with a patient dashboard for viewing individualized charts. A centralized consent page facilitates adding, editing, or revoking consents, with the ability to store and distribute consent details to other systems. The CareExchange app was designed to function as a secure data gateway, allowing providers to locate patients and request access in compliance with patient consent approvals. Both apps were developed with secure, scalable backend systems to ensure data integrity and compliance with healthcare regulations.

Challenges we ran into

One of the major challenges was designing a system that balanced ease of use with robust security protocols. Implementing the “break the seal” functionality in CareExchange required careful thought to ensure it met compliance standards while being intuitive for providers. Integrating the DocuSign API and extension apps also came with a steep learning curve, especially when optimizing workflows for both patient and provider perspectives.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of creating a seamless and secure workflow that empowers patients to manage their health data with confidence. The implementation of DocuSign’s innovative extension apps allowed us to take consent management to the next level, offering functionalities like e-signature archiving and real-time consent visibility. The “break the seal” feature in CareExchange is another accomplishment we’re proud of, as it ensures providers only access data when absolutely necessary and under clear accountability. Finally, building a scalable, user-friendly platform that bridges the gap between patients and providers is a major milestone for our team.

What we learned

Throughout the development process, we learned how critical it is to balance user experience with strict compliance and security requirements. Understanding the complexities of consent workflows in healthcare gave us valuable insights into building trust and transparency between patients and providers. We also gained in-depth knowledge of the DocuSign platform, including its e-signature API and extension apps, which opened up exciting possibilities for future innovations

What's next for MedRM & CareExchange

Moving forward, we aim to enhance MedRM and CareExchange by incorporating advanced analytics and AI-driven insights to help providers make more informed decisions. We plan to expand interoperability with major Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems to streamline data integration further. Additionally, we’ll explore introducing multilingual support and accessibility features to make the platform inclusive for all users. Lastly, we envision expanding MedRM & CareExchange to support international healthcare regulations, enabling global adoption of our secure and collaborative data-sharing solution.
