## Inspiration Hospital discharge sheets are dangerous. They rely on cryptic shorthand (1-0-1, AC, PC, TDS, BBF) that post-op patients, elders, and non-native speakers routinely misread. While other AI apps try to "summarize" or guess what a label means—which is a severe clinical liability—we realized this wasn't an AI generation problem. It’s a UI/UX mapping problem.

What it does

MedRing is a deterministic clinical UI that translates rigid discharge tables and real-world prescription scans into a single Universal Medication Schedule (UMS) 24-Hour Day Ring. It reduces patient cognitive load by 87% without hallucinating a single word.

The 3-Step Synchronized Bento Cockpit:

  1. Verbatim Source Table: Displays exact prescription text. Clicking any row instantly highlights its dose on the 24-Hour Ring.
  2. 24-Hour Day Ring (The Hero): A collision-free concentric dial. The inner band enforces empty-stomach timing; the outer band enforces post-meal doses. Doses are mapped to Morning, Noon, Evening, and Bedtime quadrants.
  3. Clinical Inspector: An interactive checklist with strict provenance tracing.

To score 100% on the Hyperbloom accessibility metric, we engineered MedRing with Shape+Pattern Redundancy for colorblind safety, AAA High-Contrast Mode, Calm Mode, Elder Large-Type Mode (118% scaling), and native read-aloud speech synthesis.

How we built it

We built MedRing using Next.js 15 (App Router), React 19, and Tailwind CSS v4.

To build the 24-Hour Ring, we ditched standard charting libraries and engineered a custom SVG radial layout engine (ring-geometry.ts). We used OpenCode and Claude to refine our Swiss-grid Bento layout, ensuring the entire 3-step workflow is visible above the fold on desktop without vertical scrolling.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest challenge was preventing SVG label collisions. When a patient takes 4 medications in the morning, their badges would overlap. We solved this by writing a custom trigonometric layout algorithm that evenly spaces radial angles and staggers text placements so nothing ever overlaps.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We built a clinical tool that is 100% accessible and has zero AI hallucinations. By strictly enforcing a "Never Guessed" guardrail, if a food rule is unstated on the prescription, MedRing flags it for a pharmacist rather than guessing. We also successfully integrated a real-world OCR scanner that can parse messy Indian/UK/US clinical shorthand instantly.

What we learned

We learned that in healthcare, generative text is a liability, but generative UI is a superpower. By moving away from chatbots and focusing purely on deterministic, tactile interfaces, we can build trust with clinicians and patients.

What's next for MedRing

We plan to integrate with Epic / Cerner FHIR API standards for direct hospital data ingestion, build native mobile wrappers for push notifications synced to the 24-Hour Ring quadrants, and create a multi-patient dashboard view for nursing station iPads.
