🧠 Inspiration
In emergency situations, time is everything — yet critical medical information is often locked behind unconsciousness, panic, or inaccessibility. We were inspired by real stories of people who tragically lost their lives because bystanders or first responders didn’t know what they were dealing with — allergies, conditions like epilepsy or diabetes, or the medications they were on.
We asked ourselves: “What if just one scan could provide everything needed to save a life?”
That question became our mission.
💡 What It Does
Scan to Save is a system that connects:
- A wearable QR code (on a ring)
- A secure Flutter web app for users to manage their medical profile
- A public React site that shows emergency info when scanned
- And an AI assistant that gives real-time emergency advice
When someone scans your code, they instantly access:
- Your medical conditions
- Allergies
- Medications & dosages
- Emergency contacts
- And a chatbot that tells them how to help
🛠️ How We Built It
Frontend (Web App): Built in Flutter Web to let users sign up, log in, and manage their medical info Backend: Firebase (Auth, Firestore, Storage) for secure data storage QR Code Generation: Dynamically generated per user, stored in Firebase and downloadable Public Scanner Site: Built with React, fetches user data and displays it in a clean layout AI Assistant: Integrated using Google’s Gemini API, with prompts fine-tuned for medical and emergency responses Collaboration: Shared GitHub repo, Git-based workflow, and VS Code for real-time updates
🚧 Challenges We Faced
- Flutter Web vs. Mobile: Debugging some platform-specific UI issues in Flutter web
- Firebase Storage Costs: Initially limited by free tier constraints — we adapted by using optimized QR code storage
- QR Routing: Linking scanned QR codes to dynamic user profiles in React required secure routing logic
- AI Prompt Tuning: Getting the emergency assistant to respond with concise and medically safe suggestions
- Form UX: Designing a clean and intuitive UI for entering multiple allergies, meds, and contact info
🏆 Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
- Built a fully functional cross-platform system connecting Flutter Web, React, Firebase, and Gemini AI — all in under 36 hours.
- Created a secure medical data flow using Firebase Authentication and Firestore, ensuring users can safely manage sensitive health info.
- Integrated Google’s Gemini AI to respond intelligently to emergency questions — turning bystanders into empowered responders.
- Dynamically generated QR codes that link to each user's medical profile in real time.
- Designed clean and intuitive UIs for both the profile input form (Flutter) and public-facing emergency scanner (React).
- Handled complex user input (like multiple allergies, medications, dosage schedules, and emergency contacts) with dynamic form logic.
- Enabled real-time profile updates with QR accessibility across any device — no app install required.
- Collaborated seamlessly as a team across platforms, using GitHub, VS Code, and live testing to iterate fast.
- Built something that could genuinely save lives — and could be worn as a ring to speak for someone in their most critical moments.
📚 What We Learned
- How to integrate Gemini AI into a real-time web workflow
- Practical, privacy-minded use of Firebase services
- UI/UX considerations for medical data input and display
- Real-world testing on different screen sizes, connections, and scenarios
- Cross-framework development: Flutter Web + React + Gemini
💭 What’s Next for MedQR?
- NFC support for tap-to-scan profiles
- Offline mode / emergency caching
- Language translation for global support
