Inspiration

The rural health system of India is plagued by serious resource shortfall and underdevelopment of infrastructure leading to deficient health care for a majority of India. I aim to solve part of the problem that concerns the unavailability of essential medicines in rural locations.

What it does

Every village has a clinic and a basic pharmacy with general medicines. These units, although not very sophisticated can be used as hubs for that particular village and serve as a node for the whole network. There can be multiple villages like this and each of them have a small clinic and a doctor.

Everyday people traveling by road pass by many of these villages on the way. My aim is to make use of the movement that already happening all over to improve the medicine unavailability situation in villages.

I have created a prototype for a platform that acts as a means to connect people who need medicines and people willing to drop them off on the way to their destinations.

How we built it

Challenges we ran into and the solution

• People might steal/open medicines - People can join only through referrals so they can be trusted. They also earn a verification badge upon completing some deliveries.
• Illegal items might get transported/Transporter might be at risk - There's a checked and verified sign on the app on the transporter side that gives them confidence about whatever they are transporting. The UI/UX of the process is made to induce confidence in the transporter.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This solution relies on existing facilities for logistics to keep harmful emissions and costs low. I'm also proud of how this solution gives people an opportunity to serve society.

What we learned

Learned about various challenges faced in rural areas that are a contrast from the conveniences we have in the city.

What's next for MedPort

There are a couple of methods to gamify the process of transporting the medicines. Various incentives can be added like discounts on toll prices or gas in order to increase the number of people transporting medicines. However, to implement the above, deals need to be struck with gas stations and toll booths and that could take time.
