Inspiration
MedPill was inspired by a simple but common problem: many people struggle to remember which medication to take and when to take it. Managing multiple alarms and reminders can quickly become confusing.
This issue is also deeply personal to me. While dealing with health problems myself, I needed to take medication regularly and experienced firsthand how difficult it can be to keep track of every dose. This made me especially aware of the stress and uncertainty that medication management can create.
I also noticed that occasional medication can raise another question: after taking a dose, when is it safe to take the next one?
The apps already available on the market were either not appealing enough to me or too expensive. So I started MedPill to create an app that meets a real need—one that I would personally trust and want to use.
What it does
MedPill centralizes all medication reminders in one place. Users can manage their daily treatments, track their doses, and receive clear notifications.
I also implemented a statistical report that highlights medication habits: Which medication do you miss most often? Are you taking your medication as regularly as you think?
For occasional medication, MedPill helps users check the time between doses and avoid taking medication too close together.
I also considered people who rely on caregivers. Users can authorize trusted people to monitor their medication, record taken doses, and receive notifications when a dose is missed.
How I built it
It says “I built it,” but honestly, I did not have the technical knowledge to complete a project like this on my own. Codex became an invaluable collaborator: while I shaped the vision, organized the ideas, and made the product decisions, Codex helped me turn them into life!
Together, we built the mobile application with Flutter, using Firebase for authentication and data management, Neon for the database infrastructure, Git for version control, and Android Studio for development and testing. I plan to migrate to an HDS server for more security, once the tests are done. (HDS server is quite mandatory in France for Health applications to be honest)
Throughout the process, I did more than organize ideas: I learned that building an app is quite a big puzzle assembling, tested each feature, identified problems, refined the user experience, and guided the project from an initial concept to a working product.
Challenges I ran into
As someone without a professional development background, building an app from scratch was a major challenge. AI-assisted development helped me discover many useful concepts and technologies. It was incredibly rewarding to see my app come to life day after day!
One of my main challenges was designing a simple interface that could support both daily and occasional medication. I also had to think carefully about dose tracking, reminders, and time intervals while keeping the experience easy to understand.
Another challenge was ensuring that the application provides useful safety information without replacing professional medical advice.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I am proud to have transformed a real-life problem into a practical aapp that could be published on a store anytime soon. MedPill can actualluy be a deployable solution for thousands of people, it took a lot of time and conversations with ChatGPT but I am rally close to realize my dream !
I am also proud of everything I learned while turning an idea into a working mobile application, despite not being a professional developer.
What I learned
This project taught me how important user experience is when building a health-related application. I learned to focus on clarity, trust, accessibility, and simplicity.
I also developed my skills in Flutter, Firebase, database management, Git, and mobile application development.
MedPill is the start of a series of app to build, I have much more ideas :)
What's next for MedPill – Never miss your medication
MedPill is still under development. I plan to improve the dose-safety system, add medication interaction warnings, introduce smarter reminders, and hopefully find someone who wants to join me on this amazing project !
My goal is to make MedPill available on multiple platforms, starting with the Google Play Store for Android in September. I also plan to continue testing it with real users to make the application safer and easier to use.
