Inspiration
The inspiration for this project is that we are aware of how many people face the problem of forgetting to take their medicine. This is a problem that is faced by all age groups, but we saw that senior citizens face this problem the most and we wanted to create a user-friendly interface and help them with the problem of forgetting to take medicine. Some of our own relative suffered from these issues, which made this really close to our hearts.
What it does
Our application allows users to record their medication schedule, and the app sends a notification on their phone, as well as sounds an alarm. Once the alarm is sounded, the user gets some time to record that they've taken the medication. If the app doesn't register that the user has taken the medication, the alarm will sound again in an hour.
How we built it
We built our application using GitHub. We first created the design of the app and where
we wanted to place things. Then we thought of all the information required from the patient for our app to be successful. Then we created the design and labeled all the buttons and boxes. Then we coded for each button and ran the app to check for any bugs. We found some open source code online, which we utilized for some complicated functionality. We then fixed all the bugs and repeated the process till all the bugs were gone and we had a successful running app.
Challenges we ran into
One of the challenges we ran into during the developmental process of our app is how to have some of the screens only display the first time the user opened the app. We also had a problem with how much information we can or are supposed to ask from the user. Since our app is medicine related there are a lot of privacy matters that have to be put into place but we also cannot ask for less information as that can create a loophole.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are most proud of helping senior citizens and many other people take their medicines on time. So many people have complications by just missing one day of taking medicines and we strongly believe that this app is a starting point to eliminate those complications.
What we learned
From this development process, we learned how to utilize coding to resolve real-world problems. We also learned the crucial skill of problem solving, when we had to debug our app. The key takeaway from this app is how a small piece of technology can impact the lives of thousands of people, and optimize certain processes for patients.
What's next for MedMinder
We strongly believe that the future of this project holds a strong value in the market because people nowadays are so occupied with work, school, family etc. that undermine the importance of taking medications on time. With this app, such patients can effectively be reminded to take their medications, preventing them from facing severe side-effects. We believe that if this app is further developed and used correctly, it can make the work of medical professionals a lot easier, by keeping track of the patients’ health even outside the doctor’s office. Large hospital corporations can make this a subscription for their patients exclusively, also helping the medical business.
