Inspiration

As international students living in Asia, we are aware of a glaring problem: language barriers. We have seen many foreigners attempting and failing to communicate with locals! During one of our teammate’s vacations in Burma, he had food sickness. Although he was able to get medical treatment, it took him a long time. With MedLink, his medical treatment would be of higher quality and arrive at a greater speed. With the healthcare industry being one of the most important to society, we decided to focus our attention on it.

What it does

MedLink is an app and website that stores medical records on our secure database. To maximise protection and privacy, we use blockchain and end-to-end encryption technologies, along with 2 factor authentication to inhibit unauthorised access. WIth MedLink, not only do we store our user’s medical reports, we translate it to other languages. Users can check their medical records conveniently and medical experts can sign in via their hospital account, and access a patient’s medical record by inputting their UID, or through facial recognition software.

How we built it

To begin the project, we had a meeting, where we discussed the deliverables, goals, project scope, timeline for the project, the roles and responsibilities of each member and softwares being used for the project. The softwares we used includes: Notion, Discord, Canva and Figma. After the meeting, we gave around 3-4 days for brainstorming. Members of the team can input their ideas in a document shared between 3 of us. After that, we scheduled another meeting, where we discussed all the potential ideas, and selected the best idea. Then, we begin the process of producing our deliverables. We periodically have check-ins, where we discuss our progress, introduce and evaluate new ideas and solve any potential problems. After the app and website are finished, and all of the members are satisfied with them, we begin pursuing the pitch deck, written description and short video demo. Although we are responsible for each of the deliverables, we frequently evaluate each other’s work, so new ideas are introduced, allowing improvements. Finally, after we evaluated each other’s work, ensuring that there are no mistakes and that high quality is maintained, we proceed to submit our project in.

Challenges we ran into

During this project, we faced many major challenges along the way. Since we started our project late, along with a large amount of tasks we set for ourselves, we had to scramble to get the work done. Furthermore, this is the first hackathon for 2 of our teammates and the team is only recently established . This caused us to lose even more time, through introductions, time spent establishing softwares used and understanding our roles. The new teammates also have to learn how to use UI/UX softwares and Notion, which took considerable time.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

One of the biggest accomplishments is our organisation and collaboration skills. We used Notion as our organisational software and frequent meetings for quality feedback. Although we started this project late, we dedicated much of our time to create both an app and website. Additionally, this is the first hackathon for both of our members, and although we are still new to UI/UX, we are happy and content with what we made.

What's next for MedLink

After this, we plan on refining our design of the app and website. We want to introduce new ideas, while removing potentially redundant features. We want to do further research, specifically on the best countries/regions to start. Additionally, we will interview doctors and medical experts on this idea, to check the feasibility and practicality of our idea and design. Next, we will do primary research, through surveys and questionnaires.
