Inspiration
Over 80% of Indian patients cannot understand their own medical reports. With only 1 doctor per 1,511 people and 65% of the population in rural areas, patients often leave hospitals confused about their diagnoses and medications. We saw an opportunity to use ASI-1's advanced NLP capabilities to bridge this critical healthcare literacy gap.
What it does
MedLingo AI takes complex medical reports (blood tests, prescriptions, radiology reports) and transforms them into simple, jargon-free explanations that any patient can understand. Upload a report, and ASI-1 extracts medical entities, assesses clinical significance with traffic-light indicators (Normal/Attention/Urgent), and generates compassionate explanations in 6+ Indian languages. It also suggests questions to ask your doctor.
How we built it
- ASI-1 powers the entire NLP pipeline: entity extraction, clinical assessment, explanation generation, and multilingual translation
- FastAPI backend with Python for orchestration
- OCR pipeline (Tesseract + PyMuPDF) for parsing scanned PDFs and images
- React frontend with a clean, accessible UI
- WhatsApp Bot integration planned for maximum accessibility in India
How ASI-1 is integrated
ASI-1 is the core intelligence engine across four stages:
- Medical Entity Extraction — Identifies diagnoses, medications, lab values from unstructured report text
- Clinical Significance Assessment—Classifies findings as normal/attention/urgent based on medical reference ranges
- Patient-Friendly Explanation — Generates Grade 6 reading level explanations with analogies and visual indicators
- Multilingual Translation—Culturally adapts (not just translates) explanations to Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi
Challenges we ran into
- Ensuring medical accuracy without making diagnostic claims — solved with strong disclaimers and human-in-the-loop review design
- Handling poor-quality scanned reports—implemented multi-engine OCR with context inference
- Cultural adaptation of medical concepts across languages—ASI-1's multilingual capabilities proved essential
What we learned
- Healthcare literacy is a massive, underserved problem in India
- ASI-1's reasoning capabilities are well-suited for nuanced medical text understanding
- The key insight: patients don't need diagnoses; they need comprehension of what their doctor already told them
What's next for MedLingo AI
- Integration with ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account) for auto-fetching reports
- WhatsApp Bot deployment for maximum rural accessibility
- B2B partnerships with hospital chains (Apollo, Fortis, Max)
