Inspiration
Millions of deaths can be prevented just by making sure the right drug is consumed and preventing the administration of the wrong medicine. Not everyone can be monitored, assisted, or afford expensive drug administration systems currently present in the market. Here MediX comes into play. Detect the right medicine and dosage using your smartphone screen. No special equipment needed. Promise. Humans are increasingly becoming more dependent on medicines, which is now considered crucial for a healthy and long life. According to a study performed at the University of College London, a third of the elderly population (age 65 and older) is in danger of premature death due to misunderstanding medicine labels. A study of low-income patients carried out at Northwestern University showed that nearly half of even visually able participants misinterpreted at least 1 out of 5 prescriptions labels presented. With disparate education and literacy levels across the world, Medix has the potential to improve the lives of billions of people. We used UI Path to Order Medicines Automatically
What it does
Helps detect pill bottle uniquely just by placing the pill bottle on the phone screen. It can be programmed with dosages, remaining pills, to know what dosage to take and also automatically orders the medicine if they're running out.
How I built it
We developed pill containers that can create touchpoints on the screen of mobile phones. The number of touchpoints and distance between touchpoints creates patterns on the touchscreen which are decoded by the mobile device. Hence, we get to know which pill container is placed on the screen, the number of tablets remaining in the container and tablets to be taken on that particular day.
Challenges I ran into
-Trying to detect prescription pill bottles without using Bluetooth, NFC, or RFID. -Trying to implement a rotation detector which we did not use finally.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
-Pulling it off without the availability of conductive ink by using plastic containers and aluminum foil. -Making the application work offline.
What I learned
-Detecting, encoding, and decoding touch-points on the phone screen -Using google text-to-speech API in offline mode
What's next for Medix-The magical pill finder
We hope to implement it using conductive ink and simplify the drug administration procedure for everyone.
