Inspiration Healthcare information is often scattered across different hospitals, laboratories, prescriptions, and medical reports. Patients may struggle to organize their medical documents, understand complex medical terminology, and remember follow-up appointments.
We were inspired by the idea of making healthcare information easier to access, understand, and manage. We wanted to build a solution that helps patients keep their medical records organized in one place and makes important information easier to understand.
What it does- MediVault helps patients organize their medical records through a simple and user-friendly platform.
Our key features include:
Medical Document Upload: Patients can upload prescriptions and laboratory reports in PDF or image format.
OCR-Based Text Extraction: The system extracts readable text from uploaded documents to help organize important medical information.
AI-Powered Explanations: AI helps explain complex medical terminology in simple, understandable language.
Medical History Timeline: Patients can view their medical records chronologically.
Appointment Reminders: Patients can manage upcoming appointments and follow-up schedules.
Doctor-Ready Summaries: Patients can generate summaries of selected medical records to share with healthcare professionals, with their consent.
How we built it-We designed MediVault as a web-based application with a simple interface that allows users to manage their medical information without unnecessary complexity.
Our planned technology stack includes:
React.js: For building an interactive and responsive frontend.
Node.js and Express.js: For backend logic and API development.
PostgreSQL: For storing structured information about users and medical records.
OCR Technology: For extracting text from uploaded medical documents.
AI API: For generating simple-language explanations of medical terminology and document content.
Secure File Storage: For storing uploaded reports with appropriate access controls.
The workflow begins when a user uploads a medical report. The document is processed to extract readable text, which can then be organized into the user's medical history. AI can help explain the extracted information in simpler language, while the user can review their records and generate a summary for a doctor.
We focused on creating a solution that is practical, accessible, and capable of being expanded with additional healthcare-management features.
Challenges we ran into-One of the main challenges in developing MediVault is dealing with the variety of medical documents. Prescriptions and laboratory reports can have different layouts, image quality, handwriting, and terminology. Extracting accurate information from every document is therefore difficult.
Another challenge is ensuring that AI-generated explanations remain clear and faithful to the original report. Medical information must be handled carefully, and users should be able to verify extracted values against their original documents.
We also identified privacy and security as important design considerations. Medical records are sensitive, so the platform must ensure that only authorized users can access them and that information is shared only with appropriate consent.
These challenges helped us recognize the importance of document validation, responsible AI use, and secure system design.
Accomplishments that we're proud of-We are proud to develop MediVault, a project focused on solving a real-world healthcare problem through technology and AI.
Our biggest accomplishment is bringing together the idea of medical document management, AI-powered explanations, and organized health records into one platform. We focused on making medical information easier for patients to access, understand, and manage
What we learned -Working on MediVault helped us explore how technology can address practical problems in healthcare.
We learned about the role of OCR in converting scanned documents into machine-readable text, the potential of AI to simplify complex information, and the importance of connecting frontend interfaces with backend services and databases.
We also gained a better understanding of the challenges involved in handling sensitive personal information. Healthcare applications require more than a good user interface: they need appropriate security, access controls, user consent, and careful handling of potentially inaccurate extracted or AI-generated information.
Most importantly, we learned that a useful AI solution should not simply demonstrate advanced technology. It should solve a real problem and make the user's experience easier.
