Inspiration

As a student nurse, I have seen how important clear healthcare instructions are for patients. During my clinical duties, I noticed that patients in hospitals have nurses and healthcare professionals around them who can explain instructions, administer medicines on time, and clarify medical terminology.

But the situation can be very different after a patient goes home.

A prescription, discharge instruction, test preparation, wound-care instruction, or follow-up plan may contain medical words and terminology that are difficult for an ordinary patient or family member to understand. At home, there may not be a healthcare professional available to explain what the doctor meant, when something should be done, or why it is important.

This made me think about a simple but important question: What happens when a patient understands their treatment in the hospital, but struggles to understand the same instructions after going home?

As a nursing student, this problem felt personal to me. Good healthcare should not stop when a patient leaves the hospital. Patients and their families should be able to understand the instructions they are expected to follow at home.

That idea inspired me to build Understand AI — a simple AI-based tool that helps turn complex healthcare instructions into clearer, easier-to-understand language while explaining why the instructions matter.

What it does

Understand AI is a simple web-based tool that helps patients and families understand complex healthcare instructions.

The user can paste any difficult medical instruction — such as a prescription, discharge summary, lab test preparation, wound-care instruction, or follow-up plan — into the tool. The AI then explains the same instruction in clear, simple, everyday language and also explains why it is important to follow.

The goal is to make healthcare instructions easier to understand at home, where a nurse or doctor may not be available to explain them, helping patients feel more confident about what they need to do next.

How we built it

We built Understand AI as an interactive web prototype using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and AI. We designed a simple interface where users can enter difficult healthcare instructions and receive a clear, easy-to-understand explanation of what they mean and why they matter. We tested the prototype and refined the interface to make it simple and user-friendly.

Challenges we ran into

As a beginner in programming, one of our biggest challenges was learning how to build a working web project and connect it with AI. Setting up the API, making the interface interactive, and ensuring that healthcare instructions were explained clearly and responsibly required a lot of testing and problem-solving.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we turned a real healthcare problem observed during nursing clinicals into a working AI prototype. Starting with limited programming experience, we learned new technologies, built an interactive website, connected it with AI, and created a tool that can make complex healthcare instructions easier to understand.

What we learned

We learned how to turn a real healthcare problem into a practical AI solution. We also learned the basics of web development, AI integration, API setup, and user-focused design. Most importantly, we learned that healthcare technology should be simple, clear, and responsible.

What's next for Understand AI

We plan to expand Understand AI to support more types of healthcare instructions, add multiple-language support, and improve its safety and usability. Our long-term goal is to make it a reliable patient-education tool that helps people understand healthcare instructions more confidently at home.
