Health care is an important part of all of our lives. But for a busy family, a child’s medication schedule won’t be the only thing on their mind. We saw an opportunity to assist parents and their children in remembering to take important medications in a way that is comforting to the child and provides agency to the child with their medicine. MediTed is a teddybear with a built-in speaker that reminds a child when it’s time to take medication or follow the next step of a treatment plan. This speaker is controlled by a phone app that is used by a parent. We used Java and Android-Studio, and we learned a lot about Android-Studio and how to use it while working on this project! We had some trouble getting started, between setting up work spaces and figuring out how to use the tools we had, and we’re proud of how we were able to work together and make progress on this project. We only just got started with this project, and with more time and resources we would love to actually see the app in action with a teddy bear and speaker! There are also specific components of the app that we would further develop to be cleaner- for example saving data from the app in a phone battery-friendly database. We would also like to explore using wifi (rather than Bluetooth) to send messages from the app to the MediTed which would increase the range of distance in which the MediTed would be functional.
