Inspiration

Northern Ontario faces a critical healthcare crisis — 350+ physician vacancies, communities hours away from the nearest hospital, and winters that make road access nearly impossible. I built MediReach to ensure that distance and weather are never the reason someone can't get medical guidance.

What it does

MediReach is an AI-powered health triage platform that tells patients exactly what to do — self-care at home, book a teleconsult, or go to the ER immediately — using a three-tier color-coded system. Patients type or speak their symptoms, and NVIDIA Nemotron-4-340B analyzes them instantly, returning a plain-language explanation and actionable next steps.

How I built it

Built in under 6 hours using Cursor, Lovable, NVIDIA Nemotron-4-340B, and a Random Forest ML model trained on the DDXPlus dataset (1.29M patient records, 49 diseases). Voice input uses the Web Speech API, physician data is scraped via Apify, and the app is published live via Lovable.

Challenges I faced during development

Valencia API returned empty transcripts under live conditions so I switched to Web Speech API. Deploying a static Lovable frontend meant we couldn't reach our Node.js backend, so I rewired AI calls directly from the frontend using environment variables.

Accomplishments that I am proud of

A fully working voice-to-triage pipeline built in one day — speak your symptoms, get AI guidance, book a doctor — powered by a real ML model trained on 1.29 million patient records, not just a chatbot.

What I learned

Graceful fallbacks matter more than perfect features in a live demo. Browser-native APIs beat third-party services for reliability. And designing for accessibility first — voice input, plain language — makes a better product for everyone.

What's next for MediReach

Unified patient health records, real physician integration, multilingual support for Indigenous and newcomer communities, and alignment with Ontario's $2.1B Primary Care Action Plan — making MediReach part of Canada's official digital health infrastructure.
