Inspiration
In many rural regions of India, healthcare is still a luxury. Villagers often have to travel miles for a basic check-up, lose hours of work, and in some cases, they simply never make it to care in time. We wanted to solve this issue and found that the easiest way would be to re-imagine healthcare to provide support like ordering groceries online; that is, simple, affordable, and accessible to villages.
What it does
MediReach is a mobile-first platform which provides the following:
- Connects the rural patient population with verified doctors through teleconsultation
- Provides AI-powered symptom checking in the local dialect
- Supports medicine delivery through local pharmacies or local/health workers at the patient's door
- Works offline-first, where community health workers act as intermediaries to patients, especially in areas with low network connectivity
How we built it
Frontend: Mobile app (Android-first), simple for low-literacy users since it is icon-based, and has a simple interface
Backend: Cloud-deployed service, which provides doctor/patient scheduling, patient medical records, and consultation
AI: Lightweight symptom checker trained on health issues common to rural health
Integration: Tie-ups with local pharmacies & logistics for medicine delivery; data sync for offline data capture in areas of low connectivity
Challenges we ran into
- Building an application that the rural population can understand easily with their varying levels of literacy
- How to design for poor or no internet connectivity
- Establishing trust between the rural patient population and doctors on the Web
- Offering a product that is lightweight in number of screens, while still providing privacy for the users.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We have developed a functioning prototype that connects patients and doctors in three easy steps.
We added support for multiple languages for improved accessibility.
We created a system that works online and offline.
We designed a solution that can scale across villages and districts.
What we learned
When building for rural communities, simplicity is more important than features.
Based on our time developing MediReach, we learned that trust in healthcare is as important as technology.
Offline-first solutions are critical in rural Indian contexts.
Partnership with local stakeholders (pharmacies, health workers, etc.) makes the technology manageable.
What's next for MediReach: Rural Healthcare Access Made Simple
We plan to partner with NGOs, Government Health Missions, and local hospitals.
We are going to broaden our AI symptom checker to a greater number of diseases and regional dialects.
We will add features that allow GPS based ambulance requests in the case of emergencies.
We intend to pilot launch MedicReach in 2 - 3 villages before disseminating the solution nationally.
