.MediPhonics was inspired by a real-world problem we observed in healthcare: older adults often struggle with managing multiple medications, especially when pills are removed from their original packaging and become difficult to identify. Through research, we learned that medication errors are a major source of preventable harm, often occurring at home due to confusion, memory challenges, and lack of clear guidance. As we explored existing solutions, we realized that most tools focus on reminders but fail to address what happens when a user is unsure. This led us to design a safety-first system that prioritizes clear decision-making rather than guesswork. We built MediPhonics using a simple, structured approach, focusing on verified medication input, daily guidance, and safe uncertainty handling, while keeping the interface accessible for older users through features like audio support. One of the main challenges we faced was balancing technical feasibility with safety, especially around pill identification, which we addressed by avoiding unreliable global matching and instead focusing on user-specific data. Overall, this project helped us understand how thoughtful, user-centered design can create meaningful impact in real-world healthcare scenarios.
