MEDINFO: Know Your Medicine

Inspiration

The idea for MEDINFO was inspired by the everyday challenges people face in understanding their medications. Many lack access to clear, trustworthy information about drug ingredients, uses, side effects, and interactions. This gap in transparency often leads to misuse, adverse effects, and health risks. Our mission was to empower individuals with a solution that provides accurate, accessible, and actionable medication insights.

What it does

MEDINFO is a web and mobile application designed to enhance medication transparency. It allows users to:

  • Identify medications through image recognition.
  • Access detailed information about ingredients, uses, side effects, and warnings.
  • Receive alerts about potential drug interactions.
  • Set medication reminders and health alerts.

How we built it

  1. Research and Planning: Studied user needs and reviewed existing solutions to identify gaps.
  2. Frontend Development: Used React Native for a seamless mobile experience.
  3. Backend Development: Built robust APIs with Python and Node.js, hosted on Vultr’s cloud services.
  4. AI Integration: Incorporated Google Vision API for OCR to identify medications from images.
  5. Database: Leveraged reliable pharmaceutical datasets for accurate medication information.
  6. Design: Focused on intuitive, user-friendly UI/UX.

Challenges we ran into

  • Data Accuracy: Ensuring our database contained the latest, most reliable drug information.
  • OCR Optimization: Adapting the image recognition system to handle varying lighting and label quality.
  • Compliance: Navigating healthcare regulations like HIPAA and GDPR for secure data handling.
  • User Engagement: Balancing simplicity and depth to cater to diverse user needs.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully developing a functional prototype that identifies medications using OCR.
  • Creating a database that delivers detailed, user-friendly medication information.
  • Designing an intuitive interface accessible to both tech-savvy and non-tech-savvy users.
  • Building a solution aligned with global healthcare data compliance standards.

What we learned

  • The importance of user feedback in shaping a health-focused app.
  • How to integrate AI tools like OCR with backend systems for real-time data processing.
  • The critical role of compliance in handling sensitive healthcare data.
  • Strategies to address diverse user needs in a single platform.

What's next for MEDINFO: Know Your Medicine

  • Expanding the Database: Partnering with more pharmaceutical organizations for comprehensive drug data.
  • Enhanced AI Features: Improving OCR for better accuracy and expanding it to support multilingual labels.
  • Advanced Interaction Alerts: Including alerts for food and lifestyle interactions.
  • Global Accessibility: Launching the app in multiple languages for international users.
  • Health Education: Adding resources to educate users on safe medication practices and general health awareness.

MEDINFO is poised to make medication transparency accessible and empower individuals worldwide with safe, informed health management. Image Recognition:

Users capture or upload a photo of their medication label. The app processes the image using OCR (Google Cloud Vision API) to extract relevant text such as drug names and details. Data Retrieval:

Extracted information is sent to the backend, where APIs (OpenFDA, RxNorm) are queried to retrieve detailed data about the medication, including: Active ingredients Uses Dosages Side effects Warnings Interaction risks Data Presentation:

The retrieved information is structured and displayed to the user in a clear, intuitive interface built with React Native.

Interaction alerts notify users of potential risks with other drugs or substances. Health Management:

Users can set medication reminders and alerts for scheduled doses. Personal health records (if integrated) allow users to track their medication history securely.

Blockchain for Transparency:

Medication data logs, user consent records, and interaction history can be stored on a blockchain (Ethereum or Hyperledger) for immutable, tamper-proof transparency. Real-Time Updates:

The backend, hosted on Vultr’s cloud services, ensures data is up-to-date and accessible at all times.

Notifications, powered by Firebase, keep users informed about reminders or new drug updates.

User Benefits Simple medication identification and detailed information access. Alerts for safer drug use and interaction prevention. Enhanced trust and security with blockchain technology. A comprehensive, user-friendly health management tool.
