MediNexus AI — Intelligent Healthcare Access for Everyone
Inspiration
Accessing healthcare is often more complicated than it should be. Patients may struggle to understand medical reports, compare medicine costs, find suitable doctors, and locate nearby healthcare services. These tasks are frequently spread across different platforms, creating unnecessary friction when people need reliable health information and timely care.
We wanted to bring these essential experiences together in one accessible platform.
MediNexus AI was created with a simple mission: make healthcare easier to understand, more affordable to access, and simpler to navigate.
What It Does
MediNexus AI is a full-stack healthcare platform that connects patients, doctors, clinics, and healthcare service providers through AI-assisted tools and digital healthcare workflows.
1. AI-Assisted Medical Report Analysis
Users can submit text-based medical reports and receive simplified explanations designed to make medical terminology easier to understand. The feature focuses on explaining information rather than providing a diagnosis or replacing professional medical advice.
2. Affordable Medicine Discovery
Users can search for medicines and explore potentially lower-cost generic alternatives. The goal is to make medicine discovery more accessible while encouraging users to confirm substitutions with a qualified healthcare professional.
3. Digital Health Assessments
The platform includes preliminary eye-health assessments covering visual acuity, color vision, and an Amsler grid, alongside a questionnaire-based mental health assessment. Results provide general guidance and encourage appropriate professional consultation when needed.
4. Doctor Appointments and Online Consultations
Patients can explore doctor profiles, review available appointment information, and book in-person appointments. Online consultation workflows allow doctors to review requests and connect with patients through video consultation rooms.
5. Location-Aware Healthcare Discovery
Our planned Google Maps integration will help users discover nearby doctors, clinics, hospitals, and pharmacies, compare distances, and navigate to suitable healthcare facilities. Location discovery will complement provider information and appointment availability supplied by the platform.
6. Role-Based Healthcare Management
MediNexus AI provides separate experiences for patients, doctors, and service providers. Authentication, role-based access control, and persistent data storage support the platform's core workflows.
How We Built It
The application is built using Java 17, Spring Boot 3, Spring Security, JWT authentication, Spring Data JPA, Hibernate, PostgreSQL, Thymeleaf, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Bootstrap.
The backend follows a layered architecture with controllers, services, repositories, and database entities. This separation keeps healthcare workflows maintainable and makes it easier to extend the platform with new integrations.
Spring AI currently supports controlled AI workflows for medical report explanations and medicine suggestions. Fixed task-specific prompts and structured response handling help keep these features focused on their intended purposes.
Stripe payment-intent workflows support appointment payments, while ZegoCloud provides the infrastructure for online video consultations.
Hackathon development focus: We aim to extend the existing AI pipeline to use an NVIDIA open-source Nemotron model through Nebius Token Factory, making the model an active part of the healthcare assistance workflow. The implementation will be documented and demonstrated in the working application.
Challenges We Are Addressing
Healthcare applications must balance usability, security, and responsible AI behavior. Medical information can be difficult to understand, generated responses require careful handling, and appointment workflows involve multiple user roles and states.
We addressed these challenges through structured backend services, role-based authorization, controlled AI prompts, persistent appointment records, and separate patient, doctor, and provider dashboards.
Integrating location-based discovery also introduces an important distinction: the nearest facility is not necessarily the most suitable or available provider. Our approach combines map-based discovery with provider and appointment information rather than treating distance alone as a healthcare recommendation.
What We Learned
Building MediNexus AI reinforced the importance of designing around real user workflows instead of isolated features. AI is most useful when integrated into a broader product experience with clear boundaries, structured outputs, and appropriate human oversight.
We also learned how authentication, database design, third-party APIs, payments, and real-time communication must work together to deliver a coherent application.
Impact and Future Vision
Our goal is to reduce the friction between a patient's healthcare need and the next practical step: understanding a report, exploring affordable medicine options, finding a doctor, booking an appointment, or reaching a nearby medical facility.
Next, we aim to strengthen the platform with NVIDIA-powered AI inference through Nebius, Google Maps-based healthcare discovery, improved provider availability, multilingual accessibility, and more comprehensive patient history workflows.
MediNexus AI is a step toward a more connected healthcare experience—one that combines useful AI assistance with practical access to healthcare services, while keeping medical professionals central to clinical decisions.
