Inspiration
Access to primary health care (PHC) is a whole-of-society approach to effectively organize and strengthen national health systems to bring services for health and wellbeing closer to communities. Therefore, to ensure the effective management and distribution of PHC, patient data must be documented adequately. The recording of patient care generally takes place during the consultation period. This is commonly done using a register, a document used to record patient data ranging from a registration number, name, age, sex and health data pertinent to the patient care process. Recording of information includes line-listing of care, completion of patient cards (that may or may not be kept in facilities) and tally sheets (for services such as immunization and out-patient care. Most recording in PHC facilities is predominantly paper-based.
However, there are many limitations to this process and the challenges resulting from the practice include loss of data, duplication of data, and inconsistent and improper treatment due to poor record keeping.
Our solution to solving access to Primary Health Care (What it does)
We developed an Electronic Health Record (EHR) management system which helps the process of creating, storing, organizing, and sharing electronic health records for patients.
- The EHR would serve as a digital version of a patient's paper chart and contains all the patient's medical and treatment history, including laboratory test results, medication information, diagnostic images, and other relevant information.
- The EHR management systems will allow healthcare providers to access and update patient records in real-time, which helps improve the quality of care, increase efficiency, and reduce medical errors.
- EHR systems can be integrated with other healthcare systems, such as billing and insurance, to streamline administrative processes.
- EHR management will be essential to modern healthcare in driving access to primary healthcare. It allows healthcare providers to make informed decisions based on accurate and up-to-date patient information.
How we built it
Our tech solution aims to improve access to heart care by ensuring patients' medical data is readily available and accessible to both the medical practitioner and the patients.
We built the solution using React Js for the frontend, and Node Js for the backend and we deployed our solution on the Azure Apps service.
Technology Requirement:
A Web Application Backend framework: Node.Js Frontend framework: React Cloud services: Azure. APIs: APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) can be integrated to fetch data from external sources such as databases, health record systems, and online pharmacy platforms. Machine Learning and AI: Machine learning and AI-based technologies can be used to develop the facilities to help adequately manage the patient's medical data. (for future integration) Payment gateways: Payment gateway integrations such as PayPal or Stripe can be used to enable secure and seamless transactions for the online pharmacy feature. (for future integration) Communication APIs: Communication APIs such as Twilio or Sendbird can be integrated to enable real-time communication between doctors and patients during online consultations. (for future integration)
Challenges we ran into
We ran into a series of challenges such as deploying our solution on Azure and a very limited time to build our solution.
Business Requirement
The business requirements for our project include; Partnership with the government agency to foster effective implementation of the solution in government-owned health institutions and hospitals A partnership with non-profit organizations like the United Nations to ensure the sustainability of the solutions A partnership with cloud Service Providers to actualise the deployment of our solution Partnership with Non-governmental hospitals and organizations to ensure broader adoption. Donations from agencies, how to help keeps our services running.
What we learned
Team building, communication
What's next for MediMinds
- Tracking of appointments and medical health record update
