Inspiration
Given the majority of Australia has been dealing with lockdowns, its hard to stay motivated to have a healthy lifestyle. Particularly for people at higher risk who are left unsupported due to reduced supervision, this is a difficult time to track and manage physical health. People living with obesity and similar disease have been identified at significantly higher risk of COVID-19 among other diseases. This was our inspiration for creating MediHelp for the health stream.
What it does
The website has two main pages. One page is a calculator for body mass index, a rough measure of someone weight. The other is for basal metabolic rate. The UI and output are very simple and intuitive to use. We had further ideas to deploy, such as a machine learning risk predictor model, but due to time constraints we were unable to implement them.
How we built it
The website has no backend technologies. The main technologies used are React, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.
Challenges we ran into & accomplishments
The majority of our group had no experience with frontend technologies like HTML and Javascript. The main challenge was becoming acquainted with these languages, and building the website within 2 days. Further, we were unfamiliar with the use of git in a development environment, which led to some hiccups. The main achievement our team is proud of is going from learning these technologies, to creating a simple, sleek, and functional website within 24 hours. Although it wasn’t easy, there is a strong sense of accomplishment.
What we learned
This was a great learning experience for us. Most of us learnt new front-end technologies, and became familiar with the standard development workflow of git.
What's next for MediHelp
MediHelp will continue to exist as a side project for us to work on as we learn new technologies. We will carry on adding extra features and changing the design, until we host the site onto github pages.
