Our story in developing MediGuide
Inspiration
The idea for MediGuide came from seeing how difficult it can be, especially for older adults, to manage their medications. Many people struggle to remember when and how much to take, and the doctor’s instructions can be confusing. This often leads to missed doses or mistakes that can affect their health. We wanted to create something simple and stress-free to follow a medication plan so that people can take the right medication at the right time without worry or confusion.
What it does
MediGuide helps people follow their medication instructions by turning them into easy-to-understand, step-by-step visuals. Instead of just reading a long list of instructions, users can see clear images that show what medication to take, how much, and when. The app also sends reminders when it’s time to take the next dose, so users don’t have to worry about forgetting. It’s designed to make taking medicine as simple and clear as possible.
How we built it
We started by talking to people with trouble managing their medications, like seniors and caregivers, to understand their biggest challenges. With that feedback, we built a website where healthcare providers can enter medication details for their patients. The website automatically creates personalized visual guides that make it easier for patients to understand what to take, when, and how.
We’re also planning to make it available as an extension that doctors can use directly in their workflow, so they can quickly generate and share these visual aids with their patients.
This approach allows doctors to provide clear, simple instructions without adding extra work to their busy schedules, while also helping patients stay on track with their medications.
Challenges we ran into
One big challenge was making sure the visual guides were simple enough for everyone to understand, without losing important information. Medications can be complicated, so we had to find the right balance between giving enough detail but not overwhelming the user. Another challenge was designing something that works for a wide range of people, including those with vision or cognitive issues, which required a lot of testing and tweaking.
We don't have time to train our own AI model to create specific pill icons and others so we decided to go with Figma for addressing our ideas.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re really proud that we managed to make something so simple and helpful. During testing, users told us how much easier it was to follow their medication schedules, which was incredibly rewarding
What we learned
We learned just how important it is to focus on the user’s experience, especially when it comes to health-related. Small details, like clear visuals and easy-to-understand steps, can make a huge difference in helping people follow their medication plans. We also learned a lot about the technical side of things, like how to securely handle medical information while keeping the app simple and easy to use.
What's next for MediGuide
here’s a lot we want to do next! We’re planning to add more features, like support for different languages and voice instructions for people who have trouble seeing. We’re also working on adding warnings for possible medication interactions, so users can stay safe. Eventually, we want MediGuide to be a complete solution that not only helps people take their meds but also gives caregivers and doctors a way to track and improve treatment.
