Inspiration

The idea for "Medieval Tactics" was born out of our desire to take a trip down memory lane, back to our childhood. We all recall the days when we would line up our toy soldiers on the table and strategize grand battles. Each soldier became a great hero in our minds, participating in epic battles in the worlds we built with our imagination. Our inspiration to create this game came from the wish to relive and share that pure imagination and creative spirit. With the possibilities offered by technology and mixed reality, we decided to bring those unforgettable childhood memories to life. Instead of toy soldiers on the table, we now have a virtual army and an endless battlefield beyond the walls of our rooms. "Medieval Tactics" seeks to allow players not only to experience the excitement of their childhood but also to engage in a tactical challenge that pushes the boundaries of modern technology. We aspired to create an adventure that blends nostalgia with modern innovation, awakening the child within each player.

What It Does

"Medieval Tactics" transcends the traditional strategy game by offering a fully innovative and interactive experience. It provides a platform where players can showcase both strategic thinking and creativity through dynamic gameplay. Players can shape, command, and control the battlefield with their own hands. The voice command system allows you to command your army with just your words. There's no need for traditional button or mouse clicks anymore—directing your soldiers with your voice is intuitive and highly satisfying. As you shout commands like "Forward!" or "Attack!" to destroy the enemy’s castle, the game immerses you completely, making you feel like a true commander. A Key feature is the presence of four distinct troop types, each with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. This diversity in troop characteristics enhances the strategic and planning aspects of the game. Players must carefully choose and position their troops, taking into account their strengths and weaknesses, to outmaneuver their opponents. Whether it’s the heavy-hitting infantry, agile archers, fortified cavalry, or versatile spearman, each troop type plays a crucial role in the battlefield dynamics. Mastering the balance and synergies between these troop types can be the key to securing victory, making each battle a complex and engaging strategic challenge. One of the most unique mechanics is that objects on the table become part of the game world. Books, cups, or any other objects on the table become strategic elements that give you height advantage. This allows players to customize their battlefield and position their army strategically, ensuring that every battle is unique and thrilling. Additionally, the ability to summon soldiers anywhere using character cards from various decks adds strategic depth and freedom. Players can alter the course of the battle instantly, surprise their enemies, and achieve tactical victories. "Medieval Tactics" delivers a strategy experience enriched with intuitive and engaging mechanics that fully unleash players' creativity, making the game deeper and more enjoyable.

The game also features a fun mechanic that lets you physically grab and throw characters into battle, allowing for instant intervention on the battlefield. This blend of physical and virtual worlds enhances the experience, making every move feel powerful. Mechanics such as destroying your opponents castle to pieces provides you a tangible sense of victory and perfectly cap off the dramatic conclusion of each battle.

How We Built It We utilized the following mixed reality features:

Passthrough Scene We also implemented SDKs such as: OpenXR Interaction SDK Voice SDK

Challenges We Faced

We spent almost half of our development time shaping our idea. Since this project excites us and those around us, we plan to continue developing it. We ended up envisioning the game as too large for a 3-day hackathon, which meant we couldn’t include some of the mechanics we wanted. Since part of our team had limited experience with XR, we lost time adapting the game for VR. During development, our progress was slowed by frequent crashes due to our developers' low system specifications, as well as the slow internet and connection issues on-site.

What we learned

Always expect the unexpected and think of backups for your backups. If something doesn’t work, build something custom that does. Done is better than perfect Wherever there’s a will there’s a way! Don't bother improving something that works

What's next for Medieval Tactics

In the future we want to build a full online multiplayer game with: Player Avatars Add special accessories like special swords and spears Fun new mechanics and different soldier classes Commanding Soldiers with Hand Tracking Special abilities that can change the player's gameplay Multiplayer playback feature in both MR and VR environments Re-engagement features like Missions, Tournaments and Events Long-term transfer features such as achievements and Arena advancements Awards
