MediCura

Inspiration

Medical bills and prescription labels are often confusing, stressful, and filled with technical language that many patients do not understand. Even when people receive important healthcare information, they may not know what they are being charged for, what medications they are taking, or what steps to take next.

We were inspired by the communication gap between healthcare providers and patients. Our goal was to make healthcare information easier to understand so people can feel more confident making decisions about their care.

What it does

MediCura is an AI-powered healthcare assistant that helps patients understand medical bills and prescription information.

Users can:

Upload a medical bill and receive a plain-language summary
View itemized charges explained in simple terms
Chat with an AI assistant to ask questions about their bill
Receive recommendations for lower-cost medication alternatives
Generate medication schedules and reminders
Find next steps and resources to better manage healthcare expenses

The application allows users to upload healthcare documents, which are analyzed using AI models. GPT-4o extracts and summarizes bill information, while Gemini powers the conversational chatbot experience. Supabase manages data storage and authentication, and Resend enables automated communication features.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was designing a solution that balanced simplicity with usefulness. Medical information can be highly complex, and we needed to ensure that explanations remained understandable without losing important details.

We also faced challenges integrating multiple AI tools and designing a workflow that felt intuitive for users who may already be stressed by healthcare costs.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of creating a tool that turns confusing healthcare documents into information that is easy to understand.

We successfully combined bill analysis, medication guidance and AI chat functionality into a single platform designed around patient needs.

Most importantly, we created a solution that can help users move from confusion to action.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned how AI can simplify complex real-world problems when paired with thoughtful design.

We gained experience working with AI APIs, cloud databases, prompt engineering, and user-centered development. We also learned the importance of responsible AI design when working with healthcare-related information.
