Inspiration Every year, millions of patients experience preventable complications due to a fragmented healthcare journey:

The Specialist Access Gap: Patients in both rural communities and congested urban areas often wait 3 to 4 weeks just to consult a specialist, unsure of whether their symptoms warrant immediate care or routine attention. Scattered Paper Records: Critical diagnostic reports, ECGs, blood tests, and handwritten prescriptions are scattered across physical folders, leading to repeated lab tests, misdiagnoses, and missed drug interactions. The Post-Consultation Blindspot: Over 50% of patients fail to adhere to prescription regimens after leaving the clinic simply because there is no automated bridge between doctor instructions and daily medication routines. Emergency Delays: In acute situations, panic and a lack of real-time ER telemetry delay access to trauma centers and life-saving first-aid. We built MediConnect to eliminate these silos and unify the entire patient care continuum into one seamless, trustworthy platform β€” connecting triage, consultations, records, adherence, and emergency response in one unified loop.

What it does MediConnect is an end-to-end healthcare operating system featuring dedicated, role-based workflows for Patients, Doctors, and Administrators:

  1. Patient Portal & Health Passport AI Clinical Symptom Checker ("Dr. Aura"): Patients describe symptoms in plain English and receive instant urgency classification (Critical Emergency, Priority Urgent Care, Routine Specialist Visit, or Mild Self-Care) with red-flag warnings and an immediate "1-Click Book with [Specialist]" shortcut. Interactive Specialist Booking: Filter 12+ verified physicians across 8 specialties (Cardiology, Dermatology, Neurology, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, General Medicine, Psychiatry, Gynecology) and hospital locations. Patients choose between in-person visits and telehealth video calls with interactive slot and calendar pickers. Encrypted Digital Health Vault: Securely upload, categorize, and preview lab reports, radiology scans, and pathology PDFs. Medication Adherence & Reminders: Recurring daily dose schedules with interactive "Mark as Taken Today" logging, streak tracking (πŸ”₯ X Days), and simulated push alerts. Emergency SOS Response: 1-tap direct ambulance dispatch (911 / 108), distance-sorted nearest hospital ERs with live wait times, and emergency first-aid protocols for Adult CPR, Choking (Heimlich), Severe Bleeding, and Stroke (F.A.S.T.).
  2. Doctor Consultation Portal Appointment Management: Review incoming booking requests with 1-click Approve, Reschedule, or Decline actions. In-Session Patient Vault Inspector: While consulting, physicians can view the patient’s full medical history, blood type, known allergies, past appointments, and external lab reports. Structured Digital Prescription Builder: Generate electronic prescriptions with standardized drug names, dosages, frequencies (e.g., "1-0-1 after food"), and instructions. Issuing an Rx automatically completes the visit and schedules daily medication reminders directly in the patient's portal.
  3. Platform Administration Console Live Health Analytics: Real-time visual distribution charts of appointment completion rates, pending reviews, and specialty demand volume. Physician Roster & Hospital Management: Enroll new accredited doctors, configure consultation fees, and update hospital emergency contacts. 1-Click Database Reset: A dedicated demo utility that restores the SQLite database to clean, pre-seeded demo records for judges. How we built it We designed MediConnect with a decoupled, high-performance architecture optimized for reliability and zero-config deployment:

Frontend:

React 18 paired with Vite for rapid HMR and sub-second builds. Tailwind CSS customized with a calming healthcare color system (soft blues #0ea5e9, restorative teals #14b8a6, slate #0f172a, and high-contrast emergency accents). Lucide Icons for semantic medical indicators and Canvas Confetti for positive feedback on booking milestones. Accessible modal dialogs with keyboard Esc dismiss and ARIA attributes following modern web guidance. Backend & API:

Express.js (Node.js) implementing a RESTful API with structured routing for authentication, doctors, appointments, medical vaults, prescriptions, reminders, and admin metrics. Modular clinical triage engine (server/symptomEngine.js) applying keyword and severity weighting mapped directly to certified clinical departments. Multer handling secure medical file uploads. Database & Security:

SQLite via better-sqlite3 operating in Write-Ahead Logging (WAL) mode with foreign key integrity. JWT (JSON Web Tokens) for stateless role-based authentication (patient, doctor, admin). Bcryptjs for secure one-way password hashing. Database pre-seeded with 12+ realistic doctors, hospital branches, sample patients, lab test reports, and appointments. Challenges we ran into Closing the Loop Between Consultation and Patient Adherence: Challenge: Most medical apps stop at appointment booking or text notes, leaving medication reminders as a completely disconnected chore for the patient. Solution: We built an automated pipeline where issuing a digital prescription automatically parses the medication array and generates active daily medication reminders inside the patient's portal with dosage and timing presets. Context-Aware Medical Vault in Consultation: Challenge: Giving doctors secure access to inspect patient history without disrupting the active consultation interface. Solution: Designed a split-screen consultation modal that renders the patient's decrypted lab vault on the left alongside the prescription builder on the right. Safe & Non-Alarmist AI Clinical Triage: Challenge: Symptom checkers can cause panic or deliver dangerous medical overconfidence. Solution: Engineered a strict multi-tiered rule engine that prioritizes emergency red flags (cardiovascular, neurological, respiratory distress) with persistent disclaimers, clear triage classifications, and direct referral to hospital ERs or appropriate specialists rather than making a standalone diagnosis. Unified Single-Port Deployment: Challenge: Managing CORS and port collisions across Vite (port 3000) and Express (port 5000) for demo environments. Solution: Configured Vite proxying for development and automated static asset delivery directly through Express, allowing the entire full-stack app to run from a single command (npm start) on http://localhost:5000. Accomplishments that we're proud of Complete End-to-End Loop: We succeeded in executing a 100% verified flow: Patient signup β†’ β†’ slot booking β†’ β†’ doctor approval β†’ β†’ in-session record review β†’ β†’ digital prescription issuance β†’ β†’ automatic daily reminder generation. Pre-Seeded Realism: The demo doesn't open to empty screens. It features 12+ diverse doctor profiles across 8 medical specialties with high-resolution avatars, hospital branch coordinates, and realistic lab reports (CBC, ECG, Chest X-Rays). 1-Click Judge Personas: Reviewers can switch between Patient (Alex Morgan), Doctor (Dr. Sarah Smith), and Admin with one click directly from the navigation bar without typing credentials. Accessible, Calming Aesthetic: Clean typography (Plus Jakarta Sans and Inter), soft gradients, accessible focus rings, and high-contrast emergency UI. What we learned Clinical UX Requires Reassurance: Designing for healthcare requires a fundamentally different UX mindset β€” micro-animations, clear status chips, and transparent disclaimers create patient trust and reduce anxiety. The Value of Data Standardization: Structuring prescriptions as machine-readable arrays (name, dosage, frequency, duration, instructions) instead of free-text boxes unlocks powerful downstream automations like dosage tracking and pharmacy dispatch. Fail-Safe Triage Design: Deterministic, rule-grounded triage engines ensure 100% uptime and clinical safety during hackathon judging regardless of external LLM API rate limits. What's next for MediConnect Wearable & IoT Vitals Integration: Syncing continuous resting heart rate, blood pressure, and SpO2 telemetry from Apple HealthKit, Fitbit, and Google Health Connect directly into the patient vault. WebRTC Video Consultations: Implementing end-to-end encrypted, in-browser telehealth video calls between patients and doctors with real-time screen sharing. Pharmacy & Diagnostic Lab API Bridges: Direct 1-click fulfillment to local pharmacies for doorstep prescription delivery and at-home sample collection for blood work. Multilingual Voice Triage: Voice-driven symptom description and audio triage assistance to improve accessibility for elderly patients and rural communities speaking regional languages.
