Inspiration

  • Navigating health insurance can be overwhelming—especially for people with disabilities or chronic health conditions. Whether it’s interpreting complex policy documents, finding nearby insurance providers, or scheduling transportation for appointments, the process can be frustrating and inaccessible. We wanted to build a tool that simplifies this journey and offers meaningful support to those who need it the most. ## What it does
  • MediHelp is a user-friendly web application designed to support individuals with disabilities and health issues by offering:
  • Document Interpretation: Uses natural language processing to break down complicated insurance documents into easy-to-understand summaries.
  • Appointment Management: Allows users to schedule, view, and get reminders for medical appointments.
  • Transportation Assistance: Connects users with local transportation services or ride-share options for their appointments.
  • Insurance Locator: Helps users find the nearest health insurance companies based on their location, with maps and contact info integrated. ## How we built it
  • Used Figma to design the UI and then used vercel to integrate code and deploy the web application. We used google cloud, open ai, for api keys ## Challenges we ran into
  • Translating complex insurance jargon into plain language without losing important meaning was a major technical and ethical challenge.
  • Ensuring accessibility for all users, including screen reader support and keyboard navigation, required extra attention and testing.
  • Integrating multiple APIs smoothly while handling edge cases like incomplete location data or canceled appointments was tricky. ## Accomplishments that we're proud of
  • Successfully creating a document interpretation feature that translates dense insurance policy text into understandable summaries.
  • Building a clean and accessible interface that prioritizes usability for people with disabilities.
  • Integrating real-time transportation and appointment scheduling in one streamlined experience. ## What we learned
  • Accessibility is not just a feature—it's a design mindset. Building for inclusivity requires deliberate choices in UI, logic, and language.
  • Health tech comes with sensitive data, so implementing robust privacy and security measures is essential.
  • Real users—especially those from the disabled community—bring invaluable insight into what features matter most. ## What's next for MediHelp
  • deploying it and making to accessible to the real world
