Inspiration

All of us will either have to stay in a hospital, or love someone that will. With the statistic of about 1 in 4 patients having an adverse event that may cause harm or death, while in the hospital, it is in everybody's best interest to help mitigate these risks. We decided to tackle the leading cause. 44% of these events are caused by medication errors. While we can't fix everything, we can help to deliver the right medicine to the right patient at the right time.

What it does

Medicine Manager schedules the dosing of patients in a hospital section with escalating notifications if the medication is not dispensed on time. The Medicine Manager device will be loaded with medication at the pharmacy with all the patients medications and a .csv file from the patient management system will determine the timing of the dosing, and the system will detect when the medicine container is opened to deliver the medicine to the patient to track completion.

How we built it

We used a Github repository to store all files for the project. We did some work in Google Colab. We made a decision to simulate hardware in this project by representing the medication dispensers with clickable buttons in the UI that change color when opened. In the real world, this would be a hardware medicine container that would sense when it has been opened.

Challenges we ran into

Identifying a good opportunity to help the customer where it's needed the most. This is such a broad category with many possible approaches.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

As a team of first-time hackers who have never met before, we listened to a "customer" describe their problem, identified an opportunity to help them, and then designed and implemented a prototype solution from scratch

What we learned

Synthesizing the visions of the individual team members into a coherent plan and executing is a challenging process.

What's next for Medicine Manager

Implementing the hardware for the medication dispenser. Optimizing the code to work with a customers existing infrastructure
